Best Bluetooth Transmitter for Wireless Headphones

Hi All, as far as I can see this hasn't been discussed before. I own a pair of Bose QC35 II wireless headphones and am looking for a good bluetooth transmitter so I can use my headphones with my TV or on an airplane (I don't want to use the wire). After a little bit of research I bought the TaoTronics Bluetooth 4.1 Transmitter / Receiver, 2-in-1 Wireless 3.5mm Adapter:

It's not the cheapest around I think, I just wanted something that had good reviews and works. However, I have tried this both with my TV and on an airplane and there is a relatively significant lag which annoys the hell out of me. I have since returned this item and am looking for an alternative. I'm also wondering if this could possibly be related to this particular type of headphones, or that it's just the transmitter.

Any thoughts would be appreciated. I'm willing to spend whatever is needed to have something that's small and working properly. Cheers.

I've read that lag is the most common problem with bt transmitters, it put me off buying one.

Even though the TaoTronics transmitter supports AptX, the QC35 not having AptX support could be part of the problem.

Thanks very much for this post, I was just about to buy this device for exactly the same purpose (QC35 II for use on flights). Any update on different options you have tried? I was thinking about spending the cash and buying the AirFly (https://www.twelvesouth.com/product/airfly), which is materially more expensive but does have some very good reviews.

    • I actually haven’t tried anything else yet, but still very much in need of a good transmitter. I started looking into the AirFly that you suggested. Reviews are pretty good indeed although there’s not much info on lag (that’s all I’m worried about).

  • I read up on things a bit more and as I suggested in my OP and as @websterp explained, the problem is not the transmitter but the headphones themselves. The lack of AptX (an audio codec) support by Bose causes lag between audio and video, regardless of the type of transmitter used. That’s a bit of a let down. Apparently Sony does support AptX..

  • This week I've gone ahead and bought the Sony WH-1000XM3 and actually purchased the same TaoTronics Bluetooth transmitter again (both were on sale). Hope to have an update here soon regarding lag for those interested.

    • How did you go? Was there still lag but minimal??

    • How'd you go with this?

    • It's actually working well for me. The lag is very minimal (probably unnoticeable to others - I'm picky) and a world of difference with the Bose. Bose still my favourite for other use, so much more comfortable to wear for instance.

PS: I have to add that I have an 'optical to analog' converter between my TV output and the bluetooth transmitter, I'm not an expert but can imagine that doesn't help the lag. In any case as I said, the lag currently is pretty much non-existent.

  • I have the Sony WH-1000XM3 and looking for the same.

Something like this supports aptx: https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/MPOW-Bluetooth-V5-0-Transmitter-…

Just want to make sure it's worth it over a $9 ebay one without aptx

    • I don't know about the one you mention but I can tell you the taotronics transmitter that I mention earlier is working ok for me (but is even more expensive).

Edit: I'm not enough of an expert to know what would happen if you buy a cheap transmitter. You could always try and pay using PayPal and then return it when it's no good (there's a paypal 'deal' where they reimburse return shipping so you wouldnt be out of pocket).

  • Reading a bit more into it I think you need a transmitter and headphones that support aptx low latency. Sony doesn't support that.
