Light Weight Travel Computer with Windows

Looking for specifically a light weight PC to take on travels and not kill my 7kg weight restiction..

What would you recommend?

Would prefer something with a bigger HDD rather than SSD performance
A longer lasting Battery
Windows OS not a chrome book or tablet ect
Under $500 Is this doable?

what are you wanting to do with the laptop?

Ultrabook (lightweight long-battery laptop) doesnt really come with big sized SSD.
You certainly want SSD. You will thank me.
The ones that come with big SSD are always > $1000+
$500 cant even give you a new ultrabook with large HDD.
Raise your budget or maybe consider used/refurbished laptop?
If you manage to get just the barebone ultrabook, get the $200 1TB SSD on the front deal page.

Who are you flying with and is it domestic/international?
Laptop is sometimes considered a personal item (not included in the 7kg allowance). I have always carried my laptop separately. Never had any issue. Depends on the airline and this isnt always enforced.
Spending extra $500 just to fit into the 7kg limit is not the OzBargain way.

    Microsoft Surface born for travelling.
    (used external HD for storage)

  • i got one of these dell laptops as a travel throw around for a trip but continue to use because of its size/weight.

edit: add a SD card for storage

  • I bought my daughter a Lenovo IdeaPad 100S-14IBR as BYOD device - 14" WXGA/Intel C-N3060/4GB/31GB EMMC/Intel HD ram for $120 from this deal added a 128gb m.2 ssd for $60 (this model has a m.2 slot as well - bonus!!).

    kicking goals.

    the laptop is really light.

    battery life is ~8 hours

when not used for school work then it is streaming movies on to a 40" TV.

you want SSD for powersaving. small benefit but it helps. also for a laptop like the ideapad - which isn't the fastest- SSD read/write speed help.

if you want "just storage" then get a microSD card as well -ideapad has a mmicrosd slot as well. how much storage do you need?

if you are not using the laptop for strenuous stuff - e.g. 3d rendering, and want a light weight laptop for "basic stuff" i.e. word, internet, watching movies then something like the ideapad is great.

plus for <$200 if something happens to it then not so much of a drama

  • You want an SSD because if you're travelling with it it's going to get knocked around and a HDD will die immediately.

  • Sounds like maybe a 2nd hand surface pro 3 or 4, with an external USB HDD or large microSD card. Should be able to pick on up on gumtree/ebay for around $500

  • Another reason to go ssd for travel is toughness and less heat. More battery time too, as someone has already mentioned. It could also be argued that because the ssd is faster, you will finish what you need to do more quickly. This of course will be more of a benefit over time (not short term)
