What Keyboard Are You Using with Your Raspberry Pi

So I just bought a RetroPie and was looking for a keyboard to go with it.

Was thinking of the Rii Mini X1 just so I can sit on the couch and use it without having to have it wired up. But not sure if the keys are too small or just garbage.

Any suggestions on a cheap keyboard to use with these? Do I even need a keyboard seeing its a RetroPie and will mainly use a controller for games. I'm new to the whole Pi thing so not sure what is required.

Thanks!

Logitech K400R works quite nicely and was cheap.

You might need a keyboard occasionally to configure/setup the system, though once you have ssh access, you can do this remotely.
I just use a controller to navigate retropie and TV remote for kodi. Haven't plugged a keyboard in since setting it up.

if you're just using it as a retropie don't bother buying a keyboard. on the rare occasion you need it (from memory only for some initial setup stuff) you can just connect a keyboard from your computer for a few minutes. everything else you'll do by the game controllers

  • Well this seems to be solved at a cost of $0 to me :) Fantastic, thanks for the help guys. I guess if I change it from a Retropie to a Media Centre or something I'll look at other options.

Anything else I should really be looking at to make my Retro Gaming experience freaking awesome?

    • You can also look into bluetooth android terminal keyboard entry using a tablet or phone.

A custom 3d printed case for the rasperry pi to make it look like your favourite console.

  • Everything remotely.

As for keyboards, ive used many, but a $20-30 wireless logitech from officeworks is imo best. Have tried little ones but get frustrated

  • Just one other thing I was wondering, When you shutdown the Pi, it seems like to start it again you have to remove the power cable and plug it back in again to start the boot process.

I was wondering if you can use something like one of those standby outlets (see below) and once shutdown simply press the button on the remote to cut the standby power, and then use the remote to reboot it again?

Has anyone done this or know if it works?

    • Although I have just discovered the SuperPi Case…..Maybe I should just be buying that thing! It looks awesome with its shutdown and reset buttons.
