  • Just wondering if telstra will end 3G in 2020? Otherwise great product.

    • Highly doubt it unless they run out of bands and needs to recycle the 850Mhz ones. They've been buying more bands anyway for 5G and recycled the older 2G ones, so don't think they will retire it so soon.

  • +3

Also note that there's an going subscription required: *The AllMyTribe® app requires a monthly in-app subscription at $5.99pm for up to 2 watches and $8.99pm for up to 5 watches.

    • for what, does that include the incomming calls, sms and Data, or just for the watch itself???

      • as far as I understand, you still need a mobile service to operate the watch … the Tribe thing is an extra cost on top of your mobile plan

        • yep, looks like it.

I still have a 200 dollar jbhifi credit, this could be a fantastic use for it.

        • Hmmmm no wonder there was an article in the AFR about this hot new Aussie tech money spinner….

          • @rodericb: There are very few kids watches around so they have done their market research!

    • +1

      Just like ring and nest

  • +1

These watches were too big for my little girl … it 42 mm across the screen and quite chunky. Just something to be aware of if you have a child who is smaller than average.

    • +7

Maybe find an OzB deal on protein powder and get her to hit the gym for a bit.

    • If you don’t mind me asking, How old is your daughter?

      • She is 6 turning 7.

  • +12

…and to think a casio calculator watch was mind blowing when i was a kid!

    • +2

      it still is!

  • +5

Damn i was lucky to get a $30 watch when i was growing up…

    • +4

      was it the calculator one?

    • +1

…damn straight. would have been basically impossible getting this out of my tight-fisted wog parents! :D

    • Don’t feel too bad. That watch wasn’t monitoring your movements.

      • +2

Honestly nothing about this seems attractive to the kid wearing it.

      • -1

Yep, no better way to build a trusting relationship with you child than constant surveillen.

  • -5

    This is a rip-off.

      Compared to?

NSW has banned phones in schools mow so parents will be looking for an alternative

      • How does that ban affect this?

As this expensive device is a phone, buying it to use at schools where phones are banned (currently or in the near future) could be a risky purchase…
(Although it does have school mode to silence it & lacks the usual distractions of social media)

        • Not necessary a phone, more a emergency watch as it has sos and gps tracking functions

After the Daniel Morcombe, schools wont be trying to remove these of kids, for fear of legalities

          • @asa79: But it is a phone. Without the phone network, it won't work. As such it may be affected by such a ban.

            • @INFIDEL: How many places besides a bunker dont have mobile reception, and even then it would still show the last location before it lost mobile coverage

        • Also has School Mode
Silence Spacetalk during class to avoid distracting your child and others.

Is there a cheaper kids gps tracking watch that is compatible with Australian communication network?

      • we use moochies and it comes out cheaper with lesser upfront cost and no subscription. may not be as refined as this one but does the job for us. been using it for a year now with no issues on vodafone network.

        • Can you use any telco service and plan with moochie?

Was thinking of taking advantage of porting in and out of services with this device

Is there a cheaper kids gps tracking watch that is compatible with Australian communication network?

        We use an old iphone.

        • +1

Does it have so's or gps tracking if they taken

    Helicopter parenting at its finest.

Kids cant do the same thing we did, like play outside and come home when the street lights came on without fear of someone getting taken

      • +3

It still happened back then… but we're a much larger city these days…

        • +2

I don't get the "it was safer back in my day" argument either. If anything it was more dangerous in our day.

      • -1

        street lights? luxury.

Come Home When it's dark……luckily we didn't live in Lapland.

      • -1

The stranger danger fear is the parent's lack of connection to their local community. Research shows You feel safer when you get to know your neighbours.

        • +1

The safety of your kids is something you will never want to risk for.

          • @andylch: Even if you sacrifice their development into autonomous adults or sacrifice trust in your relationship in the process.

        • +2

It's not the neighbours you have to worry about

    24+ Hour Battery
Actual battery life will depend on location update settings and time spent on calls. Overnight charging is recommended

    Fail.

    • That's is more battery life then an Apple watch which is 18 hours

      • “All day battery”

    • +4

That wouldn’t concern me too much. The lack of water proofing would be my main concern as I think my sons very likely to jump in a pool with it on.

For that reason alone I think I’d favour the “mooches” watch - https://moochies.com

      • Water Resistant
Tested to IP54. Spacetalk is dust, splash and water resistant but not swim proof.
        https://www.spacetalkwatch.com/

        • Splash resistant but if he jumps in to a pool then chances are it’s a goner. I wouldn’t count on it being safe for much more than rain or playing in a sprinkler, doesn’t even meet the rating for a “jet of water” which I assumed a hose with a concentrated spray.

          • @Smigit: It's better then most fitness watches

      • Built-in SIM? eSIM?
Then how to use it in overseas?

        • The moochies one? If I’m getting this it’d be more to make sure my kids are safe between walks home from school etc. and I think I’d be comfortable with it not working overseas. Might be a deal breaker for some.

          • @Smigit: Yes. In fact charging $10 for 150MB per month is ridiculous.
It is a rip-off if you can't choose your own telco and service plan.

            • @andylch: That’s fair enough. They’re all a rip off last I looked to the point that I’d probably try get a second hand cellular Apple Watch and just set up the find my device feature for any tracking if I wanted to monitor our child’s location. The SIM cost for the Moochies device was obscene for the included quota but from memory this device also has a service cost on top of the cost of your own SIM.

That said though, 150MB is probably going to be more than sufficient for the data being pulled on a watch which will be largely text messages.

Apart from being a bit extra day one, TBH the Apple Watch would tick the most boxes for me (waterproof, device tracking and cellular plan of my choice) and could potentially be used with a $5 a month shared SIM rather than needing its own service so I’d be relatively tempted to go that way. Can’t imagine they’re any less durable than these devices either.

              • @Smigit: Moochies SIM data allowance will be used for video calls as well, you know how kids are obsessed with video things? The 150MB may be used up within the first few days…

I thought about Apple Watch too, but there are many disadvantages:
                1. Requires eSIM and prepaid is not an option
                2. Must tie in with a modern iPhone and it must be always connected to the network
                3. No dedicated kid watch features, hard for kids to use
                4. No camera

                • @andylch: Fair enough. To be fair this device is close, I’d just be concerned about not having proper water proofing. If one can trust their kid to take the watch off it seems like a good option. I think it was physically the nicest looking of the devices aimed at children.

  • +1

It’s part of their latest catalogue that ends today.

It’s the same price direct from the manufacturer’s website using coupon BRS19.

    • Looks good. Any idea how to buy it in Sydney?

      • +1
        • I read it only comes in the Chinese version … And watch the GSM bands, some don't support Aussie networks.

          • +1

@Obar123: I read that too. Useless unless in fact you can read Chinese. It suggests you can use it to 'learn Chinese'. That's the best sales line I've heard for a while.

    • I prefer to buy local for electronics so I don't have to stuff around with warranty. Take it back to JB hifi for a refund or replacement if need be rather than posting it overseas etc

    • Looks nice and has good features. Two days ago I purchased a crappy Chinese smartwatch for my daughter. If I knew about this watch earlier I would have purchased this.

      • +1

Which one you have bought? Does it work with Google Maps?

        • I had purchased KW06 from ebay, it was bad and had to return it. Mic didn't work and wiwatch app crash as soon as it connected with the watch.
