Hi Guys ,
Posting my First Deal here. I have been keeping an eye on the price of Synology DS918+, wanting to upgrade from my DS214play.
Looks it's having a much much good deal on Amazon today. I am not a super fan of cashrewards, not sure if you could stack a cash back rebate from cashrewards further.

Last deal @Amazon was $671

    • It's a Nas.

like Nasir bin Olu Dara Jones known professionally as Nas is an American rapper, songwriter, record producer and entrepreneur?

        • Not American Songwriter

Just missed out too, but I guess i saved $597 :)

  • Back in stock for $759

Hi all, im ready to migrate away from my Mac Mini (with multiple external HDD's hanging off it via USB) and go the NAS route for my Plex Server. I do want to future proof myself a bit. Would this be a reasonable start? Likely only need 2x bays so DS718+ would be best?

    • +1

Yesssss! Was in the same boat! I had like 8 2TBs dangling near my PC. Not a good look when it’s all dusty 😅
Make sure you buy enough HDD for the storage and setup a cloud backup! I use BackBlaze.

      • Do you use it for Plex also? Keen to know how this manages 4K HDR content.

EDIT: Some quick reading has made me think of getting a NAS purely for Plex Media Storage and still use my Mac Mini (connected via gig Ethernet) to still be the Plex Server and manage the transcoding.

Would love to know some entry level NAS's with 2 bays with RAID (if that improves performance and backup if a drive fails). Thinking 2x 8TB drives

  • Grabbed 1 this morning thanks to OP! Going to sell off my DS418 Play once this arrived

    • is it much difference for ds418play and ds918+?
I am waiting to decommission my ds214play too once this arrived… hope the migration just simple as few clicks…

  • Thanks OP, bought..

  • Got mine - love it.

Has anyone tried the expansion 5 bay unit?
Almost as cheap just to buy another unit.

    • Definitely better value buying another unit

      • Not if you want more storage on the one?

        • Yeah I like that 9 drives combined (extend 918+) would only loose 1 drive for redundancy. Versus 2x 4 bays you would loose 2 bays. So 6 vs 8 with standard synology raid array redundancy (name?).

Other issue is merging Plex libraries ie link one plain and only run one media server- in this case the 2nd 918+ CPU would be overkill as only need one for 4k hardware transcoding.

        • +1

I have the DS916+ (the predecessor to the 918+) with the expansion box. If I had to choose again I would buy two DS916+ or DS918+ instead of the expansion box. Yes you lose 1 drive bay but I would never put a single RAID array across both DS918+ and expansion box incase of hardware failure on either units (You could lose the whole array). I have two seperate arrays (1 on expansion and 1 on main NAS)

          • @Solrak: If you have a hardware failure on either box, you can just replace the failed part and be back on your way?

            • @philsw: Not always. If the expansion box goes down or the esata connection becomes faulty then the array can fail when spanned over both devices even with redundancy. The expansion box has no cpu/motherboard, it’s basically a glorified raid card communicating with the main NAS. If you go over to the Synology forums they discuss in detail.

        • +1

If you want more storage than one you should look into buying a higher density device and selling old one. The Synology upgrade boxes are priced to exploit.

There some specific advantages of 2 like the option to run more services or placing a data mirror in a separate physical location

          • @Austere: Thanks for the feedback guys.

I'll definitely go separate next time I need more space.

Half hoping cloud storage is cheaper by then anyway, for my older 1080p stuff at least. Especially since plex already supports that as a source.

    Missed out again! :(

  • Far out - ive determined I only need the 218+ and thats selling for $479!!! Amazon dont even sell the 218+

This was a bargain I will now watch the price and buy it $100 more!

    Great find OP!

    • I was looking to expand the storage from my existing 214play
hence setup a tracker on https://camelcamelcamel.com/
surprising me I got the email notification yesterday morning, just few days I set up the alert.

      • Ive also now setup the tracker on the 218+ and have confirmed with Amazon their title for this item is incorrect and is ACTUALLY the 218+

          • @joeventus: Yep :( I saw that too. Literally missed it by 12 hours. Patiently wait now till sub 400 again!

Why is this Synology model so cheap compared to the equivalent Qnap model?

    • -1

      Qnap >>>>>>>>>> Synology

    • +1

really? this comparison compares the two equivalent models and gives synology a negative for being more expensive:

      https://www.windowscentral.com/synology-diskstation-ds918-vs…

i've used the qnap software and believe synologys are much more refined but thats just me

      • -1

Can do more with Qnap. The software has refined alot in the past 18 months. I see it as Qnap is Windows / Android /Linux and Synology is more apple (more control vs less control or smart/super users vs simple/limited users).

        • +1

like what? there's not much the synology can't do

      • -1

Best description I heard was to think of QNAP as Linux/Windows and Synology as Apple. Synology is user friendly, works OOTB, etc. lots of online tutorials. I really like mine, even though I'm doing some pretty techy stuff like running Docker and VMs - so it's not exactly limited in capabilities…

        • -1

100% correct. In the past also, the Qnap software had been considered more clunky than Synology for the average users. Since QTS 4.2 though, this gap has closed dramatically. QTS 4.3 has built on this further. If you want more flexibility going forward with more UI inmprovements to come, you go with Qnap.

        • hi, i am new to nas, and interested to invest a synology, can you kindly advise if i can install windows vm and run any windows dompatible inside the vm environment? thinking of using it as instagram bot.

        • Terrible description! First of all "Linux/Windows"? LOL there is a huge difference between Linux and Windows. Secondly, both Qnap and Synology have big friendly icons to click with all the familiar user interfaces that people understand. There's no point trying to confuse people by saying "think of Synology as Apple" that is just stupid.

        • +1

ive used both and functionally they're identical. both have linux subsystems with a webui on top.

i have no idea what this analogy is trying to say. When it comes to those 3 operating systems, each have their strong points but at the end of the day, there's not much you can't do in any of them (except gaming, windows is king).

i'd love to know what the qnap can do that the synology can't. most reviews comparing the two brands seem to favor the synology regardless of their higher price
