eBay Buyer Protection / Aus Post

  • Bought an item from a store seller / eBay / has an ABN

  • I am in Melb, they are in Syd

  • It was $413, about 12kg, 100cm width

  • 2 days later the item stops working

  • I go to get a refund through eBay

  • They said I have to pay to send it back

  • I send it back by paying for registered post with signature

  • Ebay mark it as "in transit", I add a picture of the receipt to return details

  • I track it throughout on Aus post website, then suddenly it says "this item cannot be tracked"

  • I call Auspost, they said they can't find it, the person on the phone says it will have to be "manually sorted", I call them every day and today I get an email saying it was delivered and a picture of the sellers signature is attached

  • I attach a screenshot of the item is delivered email including the sellers signature to the return details

  • Ebay still says it's 'in transit' because it is using the tracking number to dynamically pull info from Auspost

  • I talk to Aus Post on phone they can't manually update the tracking number to delivered

  • I talk to eBay on chat they say they currently can't do anything?

What do I do?

Auspost can definitely update the tracking number. Call up, and just keep asking for them to either update it or transfer you to someone who can update it. If they won't do it, whatever they say just reply "I understand" and then rephrase the question you just asked. Eventually they'll get annoyed enough to make it happen

  • 12kg, 100cm width
    registered post with signature

This is the problem. Registered post is used for letters. The article ID isn't fully traceable online.

I have sent many parcels registered with Auspost. It has always had tracking all the way to delivered.

Registered post for parcels no longer exists. The option for parcels is “signed for”. This means that at the receiving end someone had to sign for it before the postie would give it to them. There is a slight difference because registered post used to come with $50 of insurance. Now there is no insurance and you have to purchase that separately.

I would check on the Australia Post website and key in the tracking number. That way you would be able to print the tracking confirmation and eBay would be able to check that.

If you paid using paypal and a credit card you may also threaten to file a chargeback. Because as far as the credit card company is concerned you have done your bit and as long as you can quote the tracking number you can have the credit card company start chargeback procedures.

Also if you paid by Paypal there is the option for paypal funded returns. As long as you have registered Paypal funds up to about $45 of the cost of return postage.

Hope this is of some help.

          • @amanda89: What does it say on the receipt that you received when you posted the item. Nowadays every local package is given a tracking number. Even the cheapest postage is tracked for parcels. The receipt should specify the postage type. If the item is large it can’t be registered post. It has to be some other postage type.

I would also email Australia post with the email you received then give them a call the next day to follow up the email. They ahould be able to trace the email so that it can be updated given that you have a photo of the signature.

Curious as to what this "item" is?

    • No, I am not. But thanks for asking.

      Don't kill the cat…

  • Why you agree to pay return shipping? Seller pays in case of faulty items.

  • Good news, seller has refunded item, however not the return shipping. Just on chat with ebay about it now.

    • Good to hear. Hopefully they will honor that.
