Any Tips on Using The Brisbane Air Train

Not that familiar with city public transport. I’m flying into Brisbane early in the morning and need to be at Cannon Hill around 12pm. Was just looking up the airtrain online and it’s $20 from airport to Cannon Hill with a swap in the middle to the Cleveland* Line.

Can I just stop at the CBD, leave the station and just walk around CBD for an hour or so and than take the Cleveland* line?

Or does leaving the station cancel the rest of my ticket? Is a better option just to book a ticket to Brisbane Central and then just get a ticket from Central to Cannon Hill afterwards?

  • I don't understand the Shorncliffe Line part. You want a train on the Cleveland Line. Unless you mean the train is coming from Shorncliffe and going to Cleveland.

    • I was just going off the picture of the network map. I do now see Cleveland line at the other end of the blue line.

Ok. So Cleveland line changeover at central station platform 2. So it’s a different line but connected as the same colour the map

    • Shorncliffe is the start of the Cleveland line. Sitting on a train heading to shorncliffe currently .

      Personally, I'd do the latter.

Okay so having a look, Domestic Terminal to Cleveland on a single ticket is $27.90 . But Domestic Terminal to Central is $19, with a separate ticket from Central to Cleveland costing you $8.90 (non go-card rate).

So it is the same cost whether you stop in the CBD and get a separate ticket to Cleveland or get a straight through ticket. If you want to burn an hour in the CBD, go for it, costs you nothing extra.

    • Yeah on the airtrain website there appears to be an online discount so central is about $16 and cannon hill is $20. So if central to cannon hill is $8.90 then probably worth paying the extra $5 to go to central and then buy a seperate to cannon hill so not standing around for a few hours

A bit out of left field, but you could consider taking the free terminal transfer bus to the DFO (also known as "Skygate") and hang around there for a while instead. They say that they have lockers to put your luggage in while you shop.

When it's time, catch the 590 bus from there to Cannon Hill Shopping Centre for $5.80 (non go-Card 2-zone fare) - this bus runs every 15-30 minutes. The Cannon Hill Shopping Centre is not that close to the Cannon Hill train station (walking wise), but if you're getting picked up, it shouldn't matter.

ps The non go Card fare from Central to Cannon Hill should only be $4.80… Cannon Hill train station is zone 1, as is Central.

    • It’s an interesting idea. Cannon Hill shopping centre looks about 2km from where I need to be

    • And yeah. That translink fares link you sent shows central to Cannon Hill as $4.80

  • It’s been interesting experience getting a feel for how the trains work
