    Fly. It's the only way.

The bonus status credit offers from Qantas are so rare (and often targeted) it's pretty difficult to set yourself a status credit goal and expect to do it any quicker than regular flying. But when they do offer the double status offers, and you're in a position to book a lot of flights during that week, then thats a good way to get a jump on the status credits.

Cheap business class sale fares are probably a good type of fare to target to get to Gold/Plat quickly. Or that one huge round the world ticket in Business class.

ONLY if travelling long haul internationally so you can take advantage of showers in Hong Kong for example on your way to Europe.

For domestic flights, absolutely not worth it. I paid for it a few years ago when I was travelling occasionally for work but I found the food fairly average and the lounges so busy and full of bogans anyway, might as well wander around the terminal and get some food there instead.

    • Exactly right. Sydney domestic lounge is just awful.

  • Only ways to earn status credit (to elevate status)
    - flying
    - ANZ Frequent Flyer Black credit card
    - status bonus

Qantas Club is worth paying if you fly regularly (weekly-fortnightly), otherwise just save your $$

    • If he flies that often then he would likely hit gold quickly anyway so paying for Qantas club for the first couple of months would soon be redundant.

      • That's correct. Which is why I think Qantas Club membership is almost always not worth it. Go to a nice airport cafe/restaurant instead!

        • Yeah theres certainly a threshold, OP would need to do some sums if a regular flyer.

Say for example you go MEL-BNE-MEL once a month for work. 15 credits per flight on discount economy fare. 30 per month. 12 x 30 = 360 points. You need 700 to hit gold for free lounge access. So still miles off it. You need to be going MEL-BNE-MEL at least twice a month.

          • @Skramit: If you can get a corporate QFF membership it is often cheaper eg $588 for 2 years and often can get join fee waived (you can - if you pay for it and not your work - claim it against income tax as well).

            • @thatonethere: Yeah I did at the time. I think it was around $230 a year for me.

Would never pay full rate for QC… isn't it something insane like $700/yr?

People who don't fly often pay for it so they can look snobby. They don't realize they can just go to the nicer café/restaurant and blow less money there.

Unless of course you are retired and you plan to go there at 9am for your 5pm flight so you can booze/eat all day.

  • Fastest way is to fly a lot.

  • I know many people who chase status on qantas and velocity
But i seriously cannot justify the cost or understand why they do it

Higher status gets the following in general
    More luggage
    Priority checkin
    Priority seat selection
    Lounge access.

And others depending on which level or program.

To me other than lounge access, the rest is so minor, i wouldnt pay anything extra for it

    Simply weird

  • Generally the only way to reach a Qantas status tier is to fly… a lot…
There are ways to short-cut your status with promotional offers but you still need to fly.

In comparison to flying to earn 700 status credits, the Qantas club is surprisingly reasonable. But it has a first year fee which is quite hefty.

  • Depends how often and where you fly and what benefits in the rewards program that you value and could assign an actual $ amount to.

In my case im almost platinum with velocity and aside from lounge access the 1 thing im mostly looking forward to is the free economy X seats on domestic and short haul international flights. Being 6'3 the extra leg room is always appreciated.

As for priority checkin/luggage/boarding it might seem unimportant but they are the little things that you miss when u dont have them.

I'm platinum with Virgin and Gold with Qantas.

The reality is, the only way to get it is to fly a lot, like weekly or fortnightly.

To get from zero to gold, you would need to do around 25 domestic return flights within a year. So if you really need it, plan it well.

Getting it the first time basically needs a job change and or a couple of international flights. Qantas is very bad with partners, for example, i intentionally flew with Malaysian Airlines on a trip and intentionally with Qatar on a trip only to then learn i wouldn't get status points because they weren't a particular fair.

Virgin Velocity is a lot better with status credits as you can family pool, up to 6 or so people.

Overall, i think it's a total waste of money unless you are an alcoholic and love free booze or are an insecure socialite who needs to post photos on FB every time you are in the lounge.

  • There is one other reason you would chase status that many have missed, which is the priority for upgrades and the better availability of classic award seats if you want to book these. I've never done a status run in my life but the status that I get through work flights certainly helps when I book family leisure travel, whether it be from the significant point stash I get from CCs or lounge access if we fly economy.

The bottom line is that for those travelling regularly for work, having status makes the whole experience less painful.

Lounge access, better seating choices, priority checkin, not having to wait (as long) to board and disembark the plane, receiving luggage quicker are all little things which make your time in the aiport more efficient and takes the sting out of regular doestic flying for work.

For self funded travellers with status its a bit different. We actually savour the experience, and the benefits of status only make it sweeter. Imagine a 2 hour delay or more for an international flight. Obviously its not ideal but its no where near as frustrating if you are in a comfortable lounge with free food and grog as opposed to waiting at the gate with the huddled masses.

  • Hi Everyone,
Thanks so much for the replies…
So i did the maths, it works out better to join the Qantas club due to decreased baggage limits..
Since when did they change all baggage to 30kgs :(
Sooooo unfair… im surprised there was no uproar :/
