Parcel Delivery Questions

Hello Ozbargain
I started using online shopping in late 2018 and have not had any serious issues.
I have had a few questions and thoughts about this though.
Every time I have ordered package it has been left outside of my door. If I am at home the courier will just hand me the package with no signature or ID (Every
courier company you could think of). Due to this, I was wondering what might happen if the courier accidentally delivers my packages to someone else due to the lack of verification required.
While it is very time efficient and simple I would prefer it if I could have more verification when having packages delivered.
Sometimes couriers won't even knock or ring the doorbell while I am at home

Thanks in advance

  • lack of verification required.

Providing an ID is normally not required when the articles are delivered to the addressee. However, there are some businesses and government departments like the RMS or Qantas that for security reasons wants an ID capture of the addressee.

    • Correct. ID is only required if the parcel is sent via registered post and ID is required requested by sender. And person to person. Very rarely are parcels sent registered post. Usually only passports, court documents, legals etc

Get a parcel locker. Every time you get a delivery to your house you are dancing with death.

    You'll lose your parcel

    • I agree with this. Australia Post has ones that are no cost.

See if there is a click and collect or drop off option for parcel deliveries. Some couriers have alterate places, like Newsagents.

You could look into parcel letter boxes.

https://www.sandleford.com.au/parcel-letterbox-black# $399 at Bunnings, so not cheap. Can probably DIY with a self latching mechanism the delivery guy can put the parcel in the push down the lid to lock.

      Lol!

      • You just need to watch the ones that come with the white powder and the message written in crayon.

    • That escalated quickly

Sign up to MyPost on the Aus Post website,

Most my delivery will give you a notification and you can choose to re-direct to another address or get it taken to the post office (if signature is required) or left at the front.

I know buying from Amazon they are authorised to leave at the front regardless of the item. I've had PS4's and Xbox One X consoles left at the front , to which I ask a neighbor to pick it up for me

  • If you have any issues then deploy the parcel glitter bomb trap!

    • yup, saw that it is hilarious. You really need the fart gas, as well, so they ditch the parcel before knowing it is full of expensive electronics.

  • Also ask if you can get a tracking number off the company sending the parcel. At the moment I'm tracking a parcel through Australia Post and I know it is in a van waiting to be delivered to me; hopefully today. It was coming from overseas so I tracked it to Australia then contacted DHL and they gave me the Australian Post tracking number so I could track the parcel through customs, the sorting places in both Sydney and Melbourne and, now, the delivery van.

    • Auspost tracking can be bit hopeless. I've had item coming today for it to come the next day and then sometime later that night get email/text that item delivered.

      • True, very valid point, but it does give you a general idea where the parcel is. Much better than the old days of waiting, waiting then finding out they've sent it back to the sender because nobody picked it up from the post office when delivery failed and they didn't leave you a card.

        • Agreed it is an improvement and they seem to have culled some contractors who just carded without actually trying to deliver.

@Gandalf the Thrifty: Our delivery person is a stealth Ninja. I decided to check the status of my package online and it said "delivered"; "WTF" I thought, as we have been home all morning. We checked and the package was in the front alcove on the doorstep. We have a pretty elaborate "keep kitty inside the alcove system" but we didn't hear a thing, no chain rattling, no bolt dropping, nothing. The guy had to push the gate back enough to provide a big enough crack to piff the parcel through and we didn't hear it; even though our sitting room is just on the other side of the door. I'm wondering if the delivery guy and our cat are in league together.

Couriers now cover themselves by taking photos of package at your door. I've even seen bike postie take pic when shuffed package into mailbox.
    Your responsibility after that point.

We got loads of stuff delivered before xmas and still had to sign for several of them, just depends on who it comes from.

Correct. I also know one courier company uses GPS in their handheld devices to record the location the signature or parcel is scanned.

Actually worked in my favour once. Parcel went missing. Courier's photo clearly showed the porch of my neighbour :)

    • Double correct.

It basically comes down to the sender and the service that was paid for.

Amazon are happy to have all their parcels safe dropped with no picture. The courier/postie scans the article and the scanner does not give them the option to safe drop and take a photo. Just completes the delivery.

The scan event Is logged it gps coordinates.

Some companies (cameras, drones, phones and spotlight for some stupid reason) will not allow articles to be safe dropped what so ever.

If it is coming via eparcel and you entered your email/mobile number on checkout you should get a email/text message that you're expecting a delivery. At which stage you can opt to deliver, safe drop, safe drop if no one present or card to post office.

All safe drops require a photo to be taken.

  • I would prefer it if I could have more verification when having packages delivered.

Then pay more for shipping to have signature on delivery required.
