Laptop under $700 for School?

I need a laptop for school, which is coming up soon.

I have found a refurbished one, that seems like a good deal.

It is the Lenovo IdeaPad 510-15ISK 15.6" Laptop, which I can get for $329.

It has these specs:
CPU: i5-7200
RAM: 8GB DDR4 @ 2133MHZ
STORAGE: 1TB HDD (5400RPM)
SCREEN: 15.6" (1366x768) IPS LED
GRAPHICS: NVIDIA GeForce GT940MX (2GB DDR3)

Are there any other laptops that are better or similar that I should get instead?

These are the minimum specs the school accepts:
CPU: Intel Celeron N2930 or greater (i3, i5, i9)
RAM: 4GB
STORAGE: 128GB
SCREEN: 11.6"

However, I want something better than a celeron (as I found those slow) and at least 8GB of Ram. Also something that can last for a while.

I need it to be able to run Photoshop, use MS Office, browse the web and some video editing.

Any help will be appreciated :)

    STORAGE: 1TB HDD (5400RPM)

Find one with an SSD or upgrade it to one. HDDs are terrible for laptops.

It looks like the laptop is from 2016.

  • How long can you hold out?

Ryzen's zen + mobile CPUs have just been announced, should knock the price of the zen 1 laptops down a bit. Add on actual support and they'd be a pretty good buy (iGPU can hold up to some lesser dGPUs)

I start at the beginning of next month, so probably not enough time.

get a laptop with ssd, dont need any dedicated gpu if you dont plan on gaming or doing any adobe photoshop work.

    • Yeah, I'll try to get one with a SSD or put an SSD into one.
I am planning on doing PhotoShop work.

yeah you can buy one with an SSD installed already or buy one and install it yourself. Honestly the cheapest SSD that you can buy is fine to use. I think you need a gpu for photoshop work, what about video editing? i heard those programs need gpu as well

        • Might be doing some video editing.
Wouldn't be anything too intensive though. Probably just placing clips together and putting minor effects on them.

I'm thinking a GPU would be a good idea though, even just for PhotoShop.

  • So, I'm thinking of getting the Lenovo ideapad 510-15lKB, which costs $399.
It has the same specs as the one in the original post, except it has a nice 1080p screen.

Then I should also get an SSD to put in the system.

Should I go ahead and get it?

Once you experience an ssd you can’t ever go without one - from minutes of loading and boot times on a hdd to seconds with an ssd

How much are you willing to spend?
