Tiler Recommendation - Shower (Melbourne)

I need recommendations for a tiler to replace the tiles in my shower area where tiles have started to come off.

I only need the tiles on the shower wall, floor and small raised area where the shower glass sits on.

I have been on hipages and looked up a couple of tilers but no luck. Only one company has quoted so far (based on a picture sent to them) - they quoted $4k for what is a relative small area (I'm in an apartment).

Is anyone able to provide a recommendation for a good tiler in Melbourne (location is in St Kilda)?

Thanks in advance.

  • I'm also thinking about doing the same thing, except retiling the floor and a couple of walls..

When you do find someone, would you mind uploading before and after pictures?

What I've heard from a few people is that a lot of the tradesmen often don't want to do apartment jobs because of the lack of parking and dealing with the building managers. I'm assuming they have plenty of other jobs so they're able to pick and choose.

Will do - happy to share once I find someone good!

I can certainly understand that an apartment, combined with the fact that it is a smaller job makes it a bit more difficult. This is why I think the only company that has gotten back to me quoted me so high - they're one of the first companies to pop up on a Google search.

      • Because they’re testing you to see what sort of customer you are. Some people will just jump at the first quote, hence they must get some success from overcharging. Check your local newspaper and find some more local tradies and get several quotes.

The challenge is not the tiling - its the waterproofing which may be part of a bigger problem that could make your small problem a little harder to fix.

        • Yea I agree. In all my quotes I've asked for waterproofing and levelling (as it was done horribly).

I am consistently asking and maybe I'm a bit old school, but sometimes things like these it's good to have a word of mouth recommendation (hence asking this forum… no one I know knows a tiler!).

        Thanks!

How big is the area you want to do? $4k is quite a bit if it's just to fix up some tiles.

Depending on how it's fallen off and/or if its just a few individual tiles here and the, you might be able to get a regular handyman (rather than a tiler specifically) to fix it up by gluing the tiles back and regrouting it.

I was originally looking at retiling the whole bathroom in my apartment inside the shower stall and the floor) including the removal of the existing tiles. The bathroom is only 5-6 square metres of floor space and the one quote I got was $25k. That stopped me in my tracks!

          It's literally a shower wall (2.3m x 1.7m), floor of a one bedroom apartment (1m x 1.7m) so not big!

The previous person did horrible job as the floor tiles are not straight. The wall is a turd-like colour so I'd like to just replace them since some of them are falling off.

+1 just for that description! haha

I needed my splash back re-tiled. Advertised on the local facebook marketplace & community page. Got a tiler who was super cheap and excellent. I did all the prep, bought the tiles, adhesive etc. Bloke came in and laid the tiles on Saturday, returned on Sunday to grout. Kitchen Reno completed. Cost $150. For 3 walls -80cms high by 8 meters width approx all up. Used subway tiles.

    • Were there old tiles there before that had to be removed (either by yourself or the handyman)?

      • Yes, old tiles. I just removed them with a hammer and chisel.

        • nice! do you mind PM'ing the guy's details please? I might make use of him for my splashback too. Whoever's done mine has used the same tiles from the bathroom walls!

          thanks!

          • @bobbified: Sorry, I'm in Brisbane. Just sharing a suggestion for where to possibly find a tiler

  • Why did the tiles come off in the first place?

If it's just very old, it is a small job but if it's failed water membrane, it is a big job. $4k is ridiculous at any rate unless they've budgeted fixing a leak, replacing wet plasterboard, waterproofing and then tiling.

    • To be honest, I'm not sure. I have asked for levelling, waterproofing and tiling as part of the quote - levelling only because the previous person did a terrible job and waterproofing as I assume that the water membrane has failed.

      • Sounds like a lot more work than your original comment.

I think you should get multiple quotes. If you suspect a leak, there may be more leaks elsewhere. If you retile without fixing the other leaks, you'll be stripping all that work back to fix other leaks.

You need a better diagnosis of the problem.

  • Getting small jobs done is a nightmare. We had to get our laundry floor tiled and the only way anyone would touch it was when we teamed up with a friend who was also getting some work done. The tiler could go to their place, lay the tiles and whilst they were drying he did ours - then he did the same sort of thing with the grouting. The price wasn't too bad, and he did a good job, but we couldn't get anyone to bite until then.
