I used to get these ready to eat at less than the cost per roll advertised here.

I'm sure your wages haven't increased since then either…

      • +3

Back in my day, wages were a luxury.

    • Kind to share where to get?

Are they past best before date?

      • 1970’s Fish & Chip Shop 🎣

      • +2

We didn't use to have fancy pants best before date. We didn't have best, we were happy with okay.

  • Goodo…. legit.
Last time I bought an asian branded pack and they tasted nothing like a chiko roll but exactly the same as a spring roll.

    • +4

So they were actually better. Nice!

      • hmmmm errrr aahhhh eeeee scrounchie face

  • +2

These things still exist? Wow! Somebody please share the ingredients list. I'd like to know what I grew up on in the 80s.

    • +4

      Mainly cabbage.

      • Pretty sure they changed the recipe since then. They don't taste the same…

    • I think we are the same vintage. Chicko Roll and chips from the local fisho' was a weekly tradition.

    • +4

I think it was the Nazi salutes that had them labelled as Nazis.

      • +1

Depends who you ask. Many of the extreme twits on the other side call anyone who doesn't agree with them a Nazi.

        • Many of the extreme twits on the other side see a minority breaking the law and label of them the same.

Lots of vegies! Healthy stuff :-)

    Ingredients:
Wheat Flour, Cabbage (18%). Water. Cooked Barley (Water, Barley), Carrot, Beef (4.5%), Animal Fat, Wheat Cereal, Celery, Onion, Green Beans, Textured Soy Protein, Salt, Sugar, Acidity Regulators (450, Sodium Bicarbonate), Hydrolysed Vegetable Protein (Contains Soy), Spices (Contains Chilli), Emulsifier (471), Colours (102, 110), Flavour Enhancer (635).

And you only need two of them for your daily sodium and 6 to get your calories. Nutrition per serving:
    Energy 1300kJ
    Protein 8.8g
    Fat total 9.2g (saturated 4.0g)
    Carbohydrate 45.7g (sugars 3.4g)
    Sodium 647mg

    • +3

Wow not bad. Thanks for that Marty.

The addition of Soy Protein would be relatively new though. That stuff is creeping into just about every processed food now. Usually in the form of Soy Lecithin. (not ideal for human consumption, it should be used as an industrial lubricant). Soy is ok as tofu etc, but the by-products of Soy bean processing are not so good for us.

      Isn't this 50's fast food? 🤣

    • It's a shame they find the need to put animal products in them. I would love to give them a try.

    • +2

The could easily cut the saturate (animal) fat and salt and it would still taste great but would be healthier.

      • +1

I wish they'd replace the beef fat in corn jacks, sadly they're not vegetarian.

        • But that's why they taste so good.

      • +1

When McDonalds stopped cooking their fries in animal fat, they not only ruined the flavour, but they managed to make them unhealthier.

Animal fat is a natural fat. Some of the fats companies use now, like palm oil, are far worse for people.

        • True dat.

        • McDonalds use canola/sunflower oil, HJs use (or at least used to when I worked there a long time ago) palm oil.

    • Shallow or deep frying makes it less healthy one would think.

Why bother with halal certification? All they do is pay to have a label on the wrapper.

      • +1

Yep, I have even seen halal cleaning products.

        Its a racket.

How I know this? Go to any Halal butcher. Many of them wont have that certification nonsense.

    • Ozbargain toxicity

      • I don't know what the issue, add halal to it then more ppl going to eat it. I thought we are multicultural?

  • I know they are bad for me but I think they are great. (Even though I prob only have a couple a year)

  • +1

Great in the air fryer…but I find them to be salty for my taste these days.

    • +1

Wash it down with some Coca-Cola and it won't be salty. They're made for each other.

    • Did you spray or brush with oil? When i cooked in air fryer the outside was tough and just wack, not right at all.

      • Yes, they pair nicely with Coke, but also with an icy cold Mello Yellow or a Tab.

    • Agree re the salt.

My solution is to smother in Nutella.

  • +4

It’s a long way to the shop
If you wanna Chiko Roll ♫

  • -6

Wow didn't realise these things are still around and people still eat them? Along with spam should have disappeared along time ago.

    • +4

Why, because you don't like them?

  • Tasty, but I am watching my sodium intake these days.

    • +7

      Sodium? Na.

      • +1

        Na? Cl ear as mud.

  • +2

That's the kids' dinner sorted for $2.60

  • +4

    Corn Jacks too.

    • Oh the memories. Reminds me of simpler times.

  • How do these taste when cooked in the oven as opposed to deep fried?

    • Soggy.

    • +1

I had a cornjack today from the oven and I thought it was freakin awesome, no need to deep fry imo

Edit- oh I feel so good with that “associated” label

  • How to cook if you don't have a fryer?

    • In a saucepan or wok in a few inches of oil?

  • This is the Chiko Handy ad from a few years back https://youtu.be/Vf2rlIqGlqM

  • You need to fry them.

I mistakenly assumed they were precooked / microwave sort of things.

  • I purchased the corn jacks when they were half price once.

    Emphasis on once.

  • Needs more hot chicks on motorbikes.

  • Hate chiko rolls but corn jacks are the bomb
