Synology DS 918+ Help! What Is Wrong with The Disk Space Here?
Comments
Thanks AdrianW for your reply.
That's what I thought as well but why can't I add more data to it?What does Windows display if you mount a share on your PC?
When I mount a share on mine (it's a Qnap not a Synology) it looks like this.
I can't see the storage but when I double click it opens up synology webpage'.
Install and run "Storage Analyzer" that will give you an idea as where the data is. That is bizarre how it shows 10.98tb but only 280mb free.

It all adds up. His underlying disks are 7.28TB. 3 of them add up to 21.84TB (The 4th is reserved for parity). The storage pool that has been created totals 21.82TB which leaves 0.02TB (Or ~280mb) "free" on the raw disks
The volume is reporting only being ~50% full, so I don't understand why more data can't be written to it. That said, a screenshot of the details of the volume would be more useful than the pool.

hmmm doesn't really show much more.
No idea, sorry. It'd be interesting to see what capacity windows explorer says it is. There might be some kind of quota set on the share as well, so could be worth checking there.
Otherwise, based on the comments below it sounds like there might be some kind of bug.
exactly my thought as well. I know I've to transfer another 8TB more of files out of 18. Thats why I bought 32Tb of HDD and synology NAS.
Looking at the CSV files ATM. will report back soon…EDIT: Looked all the files (eg: duplicate files, large files etc) there were few duplicate files of ~ 100 GB, deleted them still no change!
Wait…what…..Synology devices are still doing this?!
I have a post, somewhere in this 6.5 year old / 418-post official thread citing the same issue. Never got an answer that fixed my problem.
Exasperated, I did a factory reset and started again. All was good.
Synology is the "mudflap" NAS (shiny on the top and sh*t underneath).
Doing factory reset is not an option for me as I've deleted all the data after I transferred to NAS. Any other avenues?
Try using the option to empty all the recycle bins. Control Panel > Shared Folder > Action > Empty all recycle bins.
Thanks. was looking how to do this. New to all NAS things and not spending enough time for learning
Same size though
Looking at the Pool Data is irrelevant. It's always going to be 100% of your disks capacity if you have 1 pool of the same capacity drive, since all of those disks are in the single pool. You only need more than 1 pool if you have extra shelves (I have a DS1813 with 2 x 5 bay shelves so each extra shelf is its own pool) or you have a bigger unit and you want to have different raid types across the disks.
The relevant info you need to look at is the Volume tab and as you've already shown, it's reporting the right data so something else is at play
Just a thought - are they new drives or repurposed ones? It might be worth doing a data scrub in case they are used and DSM is seeing something untoward.
are they new drives or repurposed ones?
they are all brand new seagate ironwolf drives. I'll try copying new files to it when I get home.
after comparing my Synology DS218+ NAS I think yours is all good.

If anything there 280mb of data not being used.
Check a Windows share and it should read the right data.Thats not really the same as Ashikk's issue. Thats the Pool data - as you have 2 x 4TB drives in the same pool, all that is showing is that the Pool equals the capacity of the 2 drives and they are 100% used, which makes sense really. You would only expect that figure to be different if you have for example 2 different sized disks eg if you had a 4TB and a 2TB HDD in there, your pool would only be around 2TB less overhead since the other half of the 4TB wouldnt be used in a 2 drive SHR.
and my DS918+

3x6tb drives.
Seems like its not an issue.Mine is like that too, like this:
https://files.ozbargain.com.au/upload/45548/65677/storage_po… - this is the storage pool - like yours, its at 100%
The Volume tab is the relevant one, below is mine

Ashikks problem is the Volume tab, not the pool tab
Ashikk is saying his is showing 10.18TB free in the Volume Tab, not the pool tab, but its not letting him add any files
This is Ashikk's screenshot - https://files.ozbargain.com.au/upload/70385/65663/synology_v…The above is pending on whether Ashikk is able to keep adding more files to the NAS and was only worried about it being full, not actually finding it full. if it works fine, then yeah, he's looking at the wrong tab :)
@jnewau: wouldn't let me add files last week, after that haven't tried to upload any files to it. I'll try adding files when I get home tonight and will report back..
As per the all screen-shots, everything looks exactly similar except the different HDD sizes so don't know where is the problem.
As per comment below if I can add files then I would assume my NAS is working fine if not then there is a problem ( might need to fork out couple hundred $s to get external drive to transfer all the data and doing a factory resetting.
Yeah, looks the same. can you add data to it though?
shared folders no issue at all you are looking at storage pool which utilises all the data.the throw off here is the 280mb which looks like free space when in fact it hasn't been fully utilised in the storage 1 pool. try creating another storage pool (2) and it may say hey here is 280 for the next pool.
Probs not maybe too small. As Geech suggested earlier he is right.
All the data should be available to you using the shared folders through Windows or Linux shares.Nice!
Now if I can add more files that means my NAS storage is working just fine, if not then there is/are problem/s.
It's just saying you're Storage pool is using 21.82TB of the available space on your drives.
In the bottom white panel it says you're actually using 10.98TB of your 21.82TB available, so you have about 50% free space for data.
I think you'd normally be best asking this type of question in the storage forum on Whirlpool.
