Airlines Refund of Taxes All Bookings Cancelled

Although I claim and get these back from AirAsia, I was wondering about domestic airlines. However it now looks like we are entitled to a refund, even on non-refundable tickets, less a processing fee.
"Airlines are charged by the EXACT amount of passengers actually flown. If you didn’t fly, your airline doesn’t have to pay your taxes to the airports."
"Should a passenger decide they no longer wish to travel, they are entitled to apply for a refund of the Government Passenger Services Tax and other government taxes paid. However, Tigerair will apply an AUD $50.00 administration fee per passenger per sector to cover the cost of processing and bank charges for each tax refund request."

HAHA $50 "admin fee" for something handled by a computer.

    • its like any business, charge outlandish fees, thats how you get rich.

and airlines will never tell you about these tax refund options

Yep, I would say intentionally prohibitive, and bordering on criminal. The ACCC should have a look at that one.
AirAsia processing fees are quite reasonable and, in some cases, zero.

      • why can't they charge what they want, no different to any business.

you signed the contract for a budget airline ticket when you bought.

there is a reason qantas tickets cost $400 and tigers cost $69.

seems you want the tiger price with the qantas flexibility.

you changed your mind, that's tough

They are perfectly entitled to charge whatever they wish for a good or service they provide.
They are not entitled to levy a penalty on a termination or breach of a contract, or the refund of a government imposed fee.
They are only entitled to payment of their actual costs.

          • @Almost Banned: Why can’t they charge for a breach of contract? When it is stipulated as a penalty for doing so in the contract.

Anyway this is someone’s beef with a budget airline not mine.

@Donaldhump: Why? Google "law of penalties"
Only governments can impose fines. Breaches of contract only give rise to a claim for loss and damage - nothing more. You cannot recover more than what you have lost.

              • -1

@Almost Banned: They are not recovering more than they lost. Fifty bucks covers the labour to process the claim, and the cost of the systems to process the claim you think the person spending 15 minutes on the phone works for free

If it was illegal how the hell are the doing it. I’m sure it would have been addressed already

          • @Almost Banned: Only applies if you're entitled to a refund in the first place. If it's change of mind - any refund they agree to is discretionary.

@HighAndDry: See my comment below 11 hours before your comment.

            • @HighAndDry: Refund of taxes is not discretionary, but less a processing fee.
And I am drawing this to the attention of those who were not aware of this entitlement.
ALL Airlines, and this is not a beef with a specific budget airline.
Tiger just happended to be a part of the quote that I included.

      • The ACCC should have a look at that one.

The ACCC should also look at change of mind refunds. Making change of mind unlawful would be good.

It was the ACCC that enforced the airlines refunding taxes that they had not needed to pay. Tiger's high fees seem to be a way of circumventing it. BTW I don't fly Tiger. I just wanted to make people aware of their rights to a refund. I don't understand the nastiness here.

          • @Peck: you sure, i did it in 1970 on egyptian airways

anyway a company can charge what they like, they haven't got a gun to your head.

i can go into stefan and pay $180 for a 20 minute haircut or go to some chinese person who does it for $10. its free enterprise.

anyway sorry if came across as nasty, you have always been able to claim this AFAIK.

        • If a retailer wants to offer a refund or replacement based on change of mind, that is up to them.
There is no entitlement to a refund or replacement based on change of mind.

      • there is some exclusions but airasia is pretty good with refunds if you take it as credit.

I don't mind paying a fee, its a lost seat for them which means potentialy lost revenue on drinks, food, seat upgrades, overweight baggage.

  • yes any airline/ticket regardless of refund policy does not have to pay airport / government taxes etc, if you do not fly. so you are entitled to a refund of these amounts minus what ever b/s admin fee they add.

you also don't pay airport tax in airports you transit on a ticket (AFAIK), just the source and destination.

There is a $60 departure tax from Australia so even if you end up paying $50 it is better than nothing.
