However, before I buy it does anyone recommend something better/cheaper?

Cheers

  • For me the windscreen one does get very hot and it won't charge in hot days. I prefer the air vent one, I got this one. https://www.gadgets4geeks.com.au/epages/shop.sf/?Locale=en_A…. In ebay you can get it for around $25.

    • Does this mount securely to the AC vents?

        • Any QI will work with the Pixel 3 yes?

@JPerez: Yes, but not fast. You need a PD charger to fast charge Pixels.

            • @John Kimble: Cheers mate.

Would you happen to have a link or know a product for fast wireless car chargers?

              • @JPerez: Wireless is limited to 7.5W/10W.

                • @whooah1979: For Pixel 3 it's limited to 5W unless the charger had been certified for use in the Made for Google program.

              • @JPerez: No, sorry. My Pixel 2XL doesn't have wireless charging. I don't believe there are any official or certified PD car chargers in general though…at least not when I was researching.

                • @John Kimble: PD charging is a USB-C protocol so there likely won't ever be a wireless PD charger. That aside, only "Made-For-Google(TM)" devices will even charge at the max Pixel 3 wireless charging speed of 10W, with everything else limited to 5W regardless of its actual max output.

If we're talking wired - there are plenty of wired USB-C PD car chargers. E.g.:

I'd be careful using wireless chargers consistently, especially in a hot car. As others have said they may refuse to work in extreme heat. But aside from that, reducing the heat as much as possible when charging will extend your phones battery life.

Wireless chargers produce more heat than the corded variety, and even then charging via cord in the car can create significant heat in bad conditions. I certainly wouldn't recommend wireless charging in a car.

This is actually a reason why I like using vent-mounted ones - it keeps my phone cooler than I am on warm days…

      • You don't have issues with the vents pushing down with the weight on them?

        • +1

They push down a little, but the bulk of the vent holder that's in the vent prevents them from pushing down more than a little - because that bulk basically keeps the vent open.

It also depends on the design: I had one where the holder was flush with the vent, and that basically kept the vent fully open, and I now have one that sticks out a little but is tiltable, and it keeps the vent open enough, and I can then tilt it upwards so the phone still faces me.

  • It looks pretty much the same as ~$20 ones from eBay.

I purchased a cheapie from eBay a few years ago, the suction cup lets go every now and again but apart from that it works well.

Ask the store how many charging coils it's got. The better ones have 3 coils in them.

3 coils give you a wider charging area, you don't have to be so particular when you position the phone.
