Which Electric Shaver?

Hi all,

Looking at a new electric shaver as i need to buy another foil for my 15 year old Braun 8595. I also have a 2 year old Braun 5 series, but it died and i'm back using the 8595.

What are peoples thought on the Philips?

The series 8 Braun (15 years old) and the series 5 (2 years old) both use the same foil and blade, so has the actual shaving ability of Brauns improved over the last 15 years or just fluff re: charging, run times etc.

any thoughts etc.

Thanks.

  • "The series 8 Braun (15 years old) and the series 5 (2 years old) both use the same foil and blade"

    In true ozbargain spirit

So put the foil from the 2 yr old unit onto the working 15 yr old unit and shave away? no need for a new shaver?

  • I go through a foil and blade every 6 months.

But the 15 year old one makes a hell of a noise, still works. I just thought if i am going to spend another $50 on a new foil and blade, i would look at a new shaver for $150 or so (1/2 price).

    • Yeh was going to say to the comment above you’d need to replace foil etc anyway. My braun was giving me terrible irritation until I realised you’re meant to swap the foil once every 18m minimum

  • As a baldy a good shaver is important!

I got a Braun series 7 for Xmas.. it's great!.. Closer shave than the 10 year old 3 headed Philishave. old shaver 30-40 mins to do my head.. this morningin it took 2-3 minutes!!!

I'm not too sure on the lubirication spray my wife was up sold but I'm giving it a go.

    • Can link us to a good website or ozbargain product page for us interested in a good head shaver.

I wanna start shaving myself bald nowadays.

  • I had always used disposables till I grabbed a Phillips Aquatouch which was on sale at HN. Was about $70 as being superseded. Got the AT750 version which was the one without the trimmer. The new version is the S5050 which has the trimmer attachment. At BigW its $70. Normally $100. I now shave in the shower which I think does save the mess in the sink. If you shave daily I think these electric shavers are great. I don't think they work well for keeping beard long as its meant to cut short. The new version with the trimmer may help with beard maintenance, but I think its more for trimming side burns.

I've had mine for about 2 years no issues. Use it pretty much every day. The replacements I just checked are $57. So will likely just buy a new one on sale next time. At the moment it still shaves well with no new head replacements yet.

Assume disposables may be cheaper in cost if you are true OZB.

    • You shave using an electric shaver while having a shower? Shocking

  • I had the phillips aquatouch for about 5 years . Dropped it over xmas holiday period and smashed.
Shaver Shop has a 'boxing day' sale until end of January and a few $150 shavers (half price from $300) .
I came across a sales person who actually was quite sincere and honest. He didn't want to say the others are crap, but he told me the Braun 1 at $150 was in his opinion better than the Panasonic (also $150 at half price) and that both brands were much better than Phillips. Also, the $150 Braun on sale there, is the 1st model up (pricing wise) in the Braun series that has the better blades .
Braun comes with 60 days money back satisfaction guarentee also .
So I am getting the $150 Braun at Shaver Shop, or maybe the $200 one (same shaver, with charging dock).
Being able to return and get full refund (not through shop, through Braun directly) this makes the choice easy for me IMO. Most I can lose I guess is the cost of postage to Braun (if they don't offer reply paid service).
Note : its not all Braun shavers that are include in the 60 days money back offer.

Better blades? That's my question, i would hope they have improved the design/blades after 15 years. But my 8595 can still use the blades of a current 5 series.

      • Sales guy was kind of like, say an engine of car is used in a whole bunch of vehicles, then you get to the higher priced vehicles, and start getting the better engine .
I asked him what he meant about the 1st model up with "better blades" he said they spin much faster, and also more of them (more blades) and said it should take less time to shave. I've been using my 5 year old phillips aqua, never having changed blades (didn't know it was a must ) and it was still working OK and shaving good IMO, until I dropped it. Certainly I often put off shaving due to the time involved, so I'm going to give the $150 or $200 (with wireless charger) braun a go, if it shaves nuch better and faster, will keep it, if not, send it back for full refund.

  • Ended up getting the Series 7.

Trimmer is on the front of it and not the top, didn't seem like a problem until i tried it at home. What a stupid idea, you can't see what you are doing.

Anyway, yes it does spin faster and has a more seismic kind of buzz. But the actual shaving did not seem to be any great leaps and bounds ahead of my 15 year old Braun.

I'll give it a few more weeks before i decide if i'll keep it.

    • I don't think shaver technology has really advanced all that much over the years, it's been more refinement of existing designs and the addition of wet shaving.

If you mostly dry shave then your old shaver with new blades will perform as well, especially if your face is already used it.

I think with most shavers there is a conditioning period where you growth adjusts to the shaver. This is where I see most people who changed brands end up disappointed.

      • That was my main question to the sales lady. As the foils and cutters are basically interchangeable, what has advanced in 15 years.

She mentioned about newer and faster motors etc.

  • If I prefer stubble, can any electric shaver does the job?
