Landline Is Still Active from Previous Owner after 6 Months of Ownership. What Can I Do to Connect to an ISP?

I have moved into a new house for over 6 months now and the previous owner did not disconnect their landline.
I know what the phone number is and not sure what I can do to sign up to a new ISP. Or can I leave the landline alone and just join NBN when it comes into my area?

    i had the same problem, but i just contacted the previous owner to let them know that their old landline is still active and asked them to disconnect. It all got sorted witihn 48hrs. Alternatively, Telstra can force disconnect but that can take up to 6 weeks, which is not ideal to anyone.

    can you actually make outgoing calls on it? Just because there is a dial tone does not mean it is active.
