Does Android have an App similar to Apple’s “Memories”?

Wish you a safe & prosperous 2019 fellow bargainer’s!

TLDR: Does Android have an App similar to Apple’s “Memories”?

So, I bought my first smartphone (Android) in 2011, fast forward to 2019, I have an unbroken history of all pics, videos taken since 2011. I update my Android phone every 2 years, and simply kept the same Google account and everything is (was) rosy.

Recently, noticed my partner who’s on Apple since 2010, and on the latest Apple today also has a full history of her pics and videos via iTunes – but a cool added feature called ‘Memories’ which does random videos after a noticeable event (holiday, anniversary, special outing, etc). This video is produced without any manual intervention by merging her pics and videos via cool fading into a video with appropriate background music (all done by the phone itself, she didn’t have to do a thing, just watch them periodically and save/edit if she really liked them)

My Android does not seem to have this feature, so did some research and found there is a ‘Videos’ option in Google Photos – tried it, and it was nowhere near the intuitive/AI quality of the video done by Apple’s Memories.

Also searched for ‘video maker’ and ‘memories video’ on the PlayStore came up with a few hits, but most are subscription based approx. $10 a month. I don’t mind finding a good app for maybe a $20~50 upfront onetime fee, but certainly not subscription.

So, does Android have an App similar to Apple’s “Memories” for making cool videos? (using it’s own AI capabilities with minimal human intervention)

  • google photos does have a similar feature if i remember correctly. it's called movie i think. edit: sorry didnt read your post carefully.

  • +2

Yes Google Photos does the same job for me which includes making movies, collages and animation.

    • Thanks for replying, but I did try Google Photos as stated in my post, and it's nowhere near the standard (imho) of Apple's Memories - hence the search for an alternative…

  • There is a stories tab in Samsung Gallery that does what you mentioned.

    • Ah, unfortunately I'm on a Xiaomi. Tried a Playstore search for Samsung Gallery but no hits. Is it Samsung properiertry, or is it known by another name?

      • it is the bult in app for Samsung phones just called 'Gallery' so I don't know if you can easily find it. Perhaps some whizz would know how to extract the .apk from a Samsung phone so you can install it? (But we also don't know if there's any other background app that does the actual story-making)

        • Is Samsung still bundling two apps for every function and usually three to five apps that all do the same function?

          • @Diji1: No I think it's getting better on newer firmware. I noticed less and less Google/Samsung apps are "system apps" (bloatware) so I can delete them.

For example I don't need to have Gmail, Google Calendar or Google photos installed- nor Samsung Mail, Music, Browser or Calculator.

Strangely, Samsung Calendar can't be removed.

  • Time to ditch android and move to iOS :)

  • Have you try Memoir by Google Now?

    • Sorry, just saw your post. Apparently my 'device is not compatible'. Wierd, never seen that notice with any Google App to-date.
