Is it not deceptive how this laptop is being advertised with 24GB memory when it only has 8GB? The 16GB optane memory doesn't count as RAM does it? Just a cache/swap between RAM+HDD/SSD?

Considering the Inspiron 15 7000 series with a 1050ti goes on sale for the same price often - I can't see a reason to get a 15" without a dedicated GPU as surely getting one with the 1050ti would be a better purchase all round?

Also the 15w 8550U is about as powerful as the older 7700HQ. This laptop has the specs of an ultralight 13" but in a 15" chassis. I guess that would make it have great battery life though.

    • Agreed about the optane. That's misleading since its being used to cache the 1tb hdd and not being used for RAM. It's actually been tested as a RAM stick by Linus and it was poor so you wouldn't want to use it as RAM anyway.

I can assure you it is JB that is advertising it as 24GB not Dell themself though.

      Yes and no.
      It is technically memory.
And I'm not sure what better way there is to advertise it, that would actually make sense to a layman.

That said, the distinction absolutely needs to be made.

      • It's memory not being used for the same purpose as the other 8GB. There's no way it should be included with RAM as 24GB. It's not comparable in speed even if you wanted to use it for that purpose.

It does not need to make sense to a layman. All they should do is mention the 16GB Optane and 8GB RAM separately. Don't total them up as 'memory' because that would make the word not useful.

        • What I was saying is, that it is memory, but it isn't RAM.

If the layman doesn't understand it, then they won't know why it's worth them paying any money for it.

And it genuinely has value in a hard drive based system.

            @Rail Rider95:

I don't think that's an excuse to mislead people. By listing it as 24GB, you will mislead even non-laymen. Had it not been 24GB (a weird amount of RAM), I would have fallen for it too. I would have just assumed it was all RAM. Only because it was 24GB I took a closer look.

It could be a semi-layman who might not know what Optane is but knows what RAM is and that the words RAM and MEMORY are often used interchangeably when technically they shouldn't be. When you put 24GB total, they might think, hey this is huge. My phone only has 3GB. This is 8X the memory!

@lostn: Oh no, I'm definitely on the side of them being in the wrong labelling it as such.
Sorry if that didn't come across clearly.

What I am saying though, is that I don't have a good marketing idea for how to list it to give it the importance (to layman and advanced) this new technology deserves.
But that doesn't mean labelling it as memory is the right option either.

If you get the 15 7000 I posted a week ago direct from Dell, after cashback it will be cheaper than this and have better specs.

I'm on mobile so it's hard to link to it unfortunately.

  • that 16gb Optane has no place in this system, makes zero sense, probably making up for lack of ssd

Yeah, it's like saying your wife has a better looking younger sister. In the end it doesn't mean anything

        but it could…

        • +1

This is why we can't have nice things

  • Optane is derivative of two words - optional & pain - meaning your momentary suffering of slowness due to lack of SSD and more RAM

    • The joke almost worked. Shame about the spelling.

      • Guess that's why they call it window pane

  • 1299 for me
