Does Air Asia search bags and confiscate water at boarding gate in Bali?

Hi friends,

I’ve just boarded my jetstar flight in Bali, heading back to Oz. They search your carry on manually at the gate and are specifically looking for water. Sealed or not, it’s confiscated.

The duty free shop said they are the only one who does this. I believe them. Another passenger stated that air Asia does search and destroy for water as well.

Does anyone have any recent experience with air Asia who might be willing to share it with me?

Thanks 💐

the same happened to us when we used Jetstar and Qantas :)

    I'ts a bit unfair as I bought water for $10 just moments before, managed to sneak it in my bag though as they don't do Xray there;

  • I recently used air asia, they didnt search any of our carry on bags. Infact they didnt even weigh our carry on's in check in.

  • AirAsia does it not just for water but any liquid. I took 2 lts bottle of Olive oil for a friend and it was confiscated at KUL. At KUL lounge, they came searching for me and took me to the luggage transfer area, opened and took it away…. Not sure why thy do it.

    • Was what carry on or checked in luggage?

Imo. did you even read any of the signs ? anything over 100ml and they will take it off you or even give you a fine or worse.
You should read the airlines restrictions in each country, KL especially.

  • take a bottle and fill it after security. If they start doing searches remove the water from your back pack.

they confiscate it because it's against aviation rules to carry more then 100mil of liquid in a single container on board.

You wouldn’t want to fill it from tap water in most Asian countries, unless you’ve got a very strong stomach!!

    • This additional search for liquids is done right at the boarding gate, so there is usually no where to fill up afterward.

I’ve just boarded my jetstar flight in Bali, heading back to Oz…

You can't blame the airlines for this.

They're the rules set by the Australian Government for passengers coming in and out of Australia.

    https://www.homeaffairs.gov.au/about-us/what-we-do/travelsec…

It's been around for years so anyone who's travelled within the last 5-10 years (or even longer) should know this. They came about as a result of someone apparently being caught with gel explosives.

    • its not just Australian rule. Its been in every airport i have been too, all the airlines have conditions of carriage like airasia

Some (most) countries have eased the LAG rules over the years, so while you can't take it through the main security checkpoint, you can buy water etc in the "duty free area" after the security checkpoint and bring it onboard.

Flights to Australia (not sure if there are any others) have a second security check, usually at or just before the airbridge, to check again during boarding stage.

Same thing happened when I travel with Virgin from HK to SYD last time.

  • any flights to Australia.

        No. Just To Australia.

At Perth international airport, we can fill up water bottles in the waiting room and bring to the plane

Doesn't it happen to all international flights, for a long time already?

  • nah mate; Certain airports enforce this at the gate for Australian destinations.

    HK is fine
    Phuket is fine
    BKK will search bags again at the gate;

HK is not fine. Second search at the gate for both Qantas and Cathay Pacific.

travelled last week and 2 weeks ago, no search at the gate. Both Business and Economy CX to Melb and Syd

      • HK stopped this policy early 2018. I had a stop over there in Oct'18 (YVR-HK-PER) and specifically looked into it as I was picking up duty free alcohol and didn't want it confiscated when I went to board.

  • Has been common practice internationally for years now.

  • Kl did this after first check on air Asia… I had water out as it was 30 degrees in the airport, guys with guns said no water, Australian govt policy. Got past that checkpoint looking miserable, woman with gun said go back outside, fill up your water and put it in your backpack silly man.
Air Asia, unlike many other airlines, do charge for their water once on board

  • Hong Kong May 2018 Searched at the gate. Also searched twice at Port Vila Vanuatu Sept & Oct. Allegedly req'd by Aus.

  • I think some folks misunderstood, this is at the gate, just before boarding. After the X-ray security.

It sounds like it’s a mixed bag. In Singapore, they do a second check at the gate, but there is a facility inside to refill water bottles. I think in KL, you can buy drinks that they will put in duty free bags and you can bring those through subsequent checks and onto the aircraft.

Anyway, I’m not a regular Bali traveller and I suspected that Jetstar was just trying to protect their revenue. They did give me a nice glass of free cool water from a large bottle onboard.

Thanks and happy new year everyone. 💐🤗

  • Next they'll be taking the piss.

  • Its not Air Asia
This is a world wide rule that applied to all air trips
However you can take an empty bottle with you and once you past security you can fill the bottle in the toilets or bubbler.
Never seen or heard of bags being checked at the at the gate (boarding aircraft) for water unless OP is a bit confused.

    • OP is not confused and this is not world wide.

Secondary checks as people go through the boarding gate are quite common. This happens at a number of airports as you can see from the other comments and is generally based on requirements from the destination country.
