Where to Buy Parts with Good Warranty Support?

Well, my ssd has failed on me today without warning. I took at look at the warranty and noticed that most stores only provide for a one year standard warranty.

Pretty sad but I guess the consumer law can't really budge much on this. What doesn't make sense is why these products are even stocked if the seller knows there is a high risk of failure which will cost them a lot of $$$, especially when alternative products which don't require prohibitively expensive RMA shipping are available. Why do they hurt themselves and hurt us?

Note there will always be someone who will fight it all the way and that risk involves fines for the seller too. That is the Fair Trading and ACCC route which will take a lot of time, and hurt both parties in a sense.

Or is there some reason why the 1 year rule exists? Does the store have special insurance for this first year? Lots of questions really…

With that in mind, do we choose the store or do we choose the brand instead?

Apparently the SSD I chose requires me to send it back to Vietnam if it is outside the standard warranty. Anyway I expect them to honour the 1 year back to base standard warranty as I have purchased a substantial amount of products from them in the past. Apparently a competitor brand requires a local courier to Sydney…

Anyway, does anyone know on top of their heads which brands can be returned locally or have a local ship point. I'm happy to pay around $15 for delivery, but not $30-80 as quoted by another ozbargain member, which is probably enough to buy another one from the store.

Should we try and make a list of brands that allow local manufacturer's warranty? Or do you guys just buy the cheapest and cross your fingers?

Its the MIN warranty period, thats why.

  • How long have you had it?

I haven't had any SSD total failures. Only 1 out 6 had significant SMART errors (fixed itself) - same PC was used for work as a development and server machine for about 5 years always on.

    • I've had the drive for around 7.5 months. The failure caught me by surprise to be honest. They really are right when they say they just die without warning.

It's at the point where I can't even mount it anymore… I thought I would turn off smart detection and try get my data off, but I think it died in the meantime.

  • I have found Seagate to have good warranty for HDDs, requiring only post to Sydney. However I am not confident they make good SSD's, they are not a semiconductor company.

The most reliable brands in my experience are Samsung, Crucial, and Intel.

If warranty is the primary concern I would imagine intel have great warranty procedures but I have never needed to return something to them

I definitely do not buy the cheapest when it comes to storage

  • Got my replacement without fuss…

Not choosing this brand of SSD again…

    WD Green…

    • I've used OCZ and Adata before. Don't think I'd trust Seagate or WD for the SSD market. I'd more likely go with Samsung or Intel these days (Adata for cheap builds).
