Brand New Replacement iPhone for Free from Apple Store

Went to apple store to replace aging batteries on both mine and the wife’s iPhone 6s plus at $39 each ahead of possible price increase next year. Phones are both 2 and 1/2 yrs old, work fine and happy with them but battery life quickly diminishing now. Anyway, wife’s battery “stuck” so they gave her brand new one (they keep the “faulty” one) no further questions asked. Good effort from Apple. Was not aware they do this and haven’t heard any reports that this is policy.

    Or refurbished?

      A refurb no doubt

      • no doubt, a refub (no retail box)

  • That's great. What do you mean by "stuck"?

    • The iPhone battery is held in with sticky pull tabs. But, over time and heat, the glue melts and makes it difficult to remove the battery without ripping the battery casing.

but jerry ripped plenty of batteries off after the shame of snapping pull tabs

        • Who's Jerry?

@No Username: He will pretty much rig everything

          • @No Username: 10% added on to all overseas purchases? Oh wait. Wrong Jerry.

You are not the father of her child. Jerry!! Jerry!! Ooops wrong Jerry.

Probably the one stolen from a vodafone store

      • so they replace 6s with XR ?

no they replace 6s wth 6s
          doh,….

    • They take only the product not the accessories and when they do replace, the replacement product comes in a different packaging. AFAIK they don't give you a new product as a replacement.

  • I had the same thing about a week ago, most likely a refurb I think, but honestly don't think anyone would notice a difference between a refurb and a brand new one.

  • Same here. SE's battery could not be pulled out so replaced with an identical one in perfect condition for $39. Mid August 2018 build with 1 cycle on battery. I hooked it up to the Coconut Battery app to get that information. Considering the one I took in was a foreign model I was very impressed.

  • Had an issue with battery on my iPad mini4 they replaced the whole unit with a refurb one no cost.

  • They probably broke it

I assume they only do this if the product is in the warranty period or if you have apple care, if you don't meet these criteria, will they still replace it no questions asked?

    • They have done so for me. It was a 2 years 4 months old iPhone, went in because the screen was not responsive (not cracked). They simply replaced it on the spot, didn’t even bother to fix it.

      • Dont think they did. I'm guessing the will be using your phone for spares to refurb other phones.

  • They did the same with one of my Apple watches that died after a WatchOS update. They asked me if they can keep it for a few hours to troubleshoot; I said yes; in a few hours they tell me it's beyond repair and they have a replacement standing by. Lucky that the watch was within the first year of its warranty. The replacement is a refurb for sure but great effort from Apple and I'm happy.

I can confirm that they do replace when AppleCare has expired but when the product is within the 1 year warranty.

    • out of curiosity, what will they do if its both out of the 1 year warranty period and AppleCare has expired?

      • They give you different options - repairs or replacement cost significantly more. Sometimes it's cheaper to just buy a device. Happened with a friend's iPhone 5S once. He went in the store with a cracked screen and they also found a battery issue. The cost to repair was more than the cost of getting a new device (his device was a couple of years old). So he ditched the phone and just bought another one lol.

Here's a really good page on whether AppleCare's worth it:

  • Because if the so-called genius' in the back room can't do something while following everything to the dot in their manual, they just replace the whole product.

In your case, the manual says to pull the tabs to remove the battery. But since the tabs broke off and there's no longer any tabs for them to pull, they just replaced the product.

(yes, there is both truth and sarcasm in my comment!)

    • This is why they reject any repairs such as battery replacement if they find third party repairs on your device.

  • Just confirming the replacement was supposedly brand new, it was opened by store staff member in front of us from box. Store member said it was brand new, never used. Not bad for 2.5 yr old phone with no warranty and no apple care plan. Still same phone, so wife not getting any new phone tech buzz, the phone is fine anyway, but doubt you could do this if your car battery was stuck and car dealership said we’ll give you a brand new car replacement with 0 km. No accessories or box was given, faulty phone had to be given to them, supposedly they issue to 3rd party who then recycles the parts. Maybe store rep had no idea or was having a joke on me, but I did question him over and over as I was not believing but he sure convinced me it was new

    • If it was in a plain brown box then the odds are it is a refurbished one.

      • White box, not bleached, I still like a brown box, but definitely didn’t get a brown one, I didn’t get any box actually, still happy though

        • even if it was refurbished it would still be in good nick. To a certain degree I prefer refurbished as they have probably been better tested.

          • @try2bhelpful: All good either way, mrs thinks it’s new so she seems happy, happy wife happy life, good bloke at apple store, even stopped the wife from buying screen protector for $50 from the store and said go downstairs and get one for $20 instead.

            • @MrThrifty: yeah, got to admit I like my Apple kit and most of my devices are still going; even my original iPod. As indicated I have no problem with getting a refurbished replacement as they are, usually, pretty pristine.

  • A family member received a brand new iPhone 6S Plus, since her old phone failed to boot up after the battery replacement. A very sweet deal for only $39.
Also, another family member had their repair request rejected due to water damage, which sucks for them as they really needed the battery replaced.

  • Do you need to book in the battery exchange or can you just turn up ? How long does it take ?
