Does anyone still buy these ???
Why not?
I tomtom iPhone app is nearly the same price as buying an entire tomtom navigation unit.
The tomtom car kit costs more than buying an entire tomtom navigation device.
It is even more expensive than this GPS device
http://store.apple.com/au/product/TX529ZM/A/TomTom-Car-Kit-f…So for the price of turning your iphone into a navigation device you could buy 1-2 GPS devices and have money left.
I'd get one of these simply because of it's 4.7 large touchscreen. For elderly people a standalone GPS is easier to use.
unless you have an iPad… :)
unless you have an iPad… :)
Sticking an ipad to your windscreen like a gps is asking for an accident and a fine from the police.
I tomtom iPhone app is nearly the same price
i use MetroView… only $15
http://itunes.apple.com/app/metroview-australia-gps-navigati…
and free map updates every few months

you don't need the car kit, you can use any cradle
yes
Try driving more than 50 km outside of any populated area and see how useful your fancy 'always needs an Internet connection' smart-phone is.
They don't require an internet connection…..
snap
the iphone at least needs location services for the gps to position itself, so if you are in a place with none to low reception tomtom, navigon etc.. wont work
tevtin, so you're telling us an iPhone can't use the GPS alone to position itself? Is an iPhone a complete joke compared to other GPS enabled phones,or are you incorrect?
tevtin, so you're telling us an iPhone can't use the GPS alone to position itself? Is an iPhone a complete joke compared to other GPS enabled phones,or are you incorrect?
The iphone should be able to use GPS only to position itself however the GPS antenna will be much smaller than a real GPS device meaning that it is less sensitive so without using A-GPS it will take much longer to work out where you are and be subject to a "canyon effect".
Using A-GPS means the issues with the smaller GPS antenna do not matter.
Thanks Anthony, I have used several GPS enabled phones and they all locked on with GPS only with no problem. Tevtin is incorrect.
i use my iPhone…
I'm happy to use a standalone GPS…. works great for when I want to make a call on the mobile (hands free of course) whilst also using it for navigation ;)
Also, you can give it to a friend or parents etc to use, and you don't go phoneless :P
Unfortunately doesn't come with free map updates (unless someone can correct me). Taken from the Navman website … "Purchase any new Navman MY60T, MY65T or MY75T GPS before 31st July 2011 and receive a total of 36 months subscription to map updates at no additional cost plus a 2 Year Warranty guaranteed."
The MY60T is available for $184 from Supercheap Auto, so I think that's still better value.
i have 55t and its laggy to the point its borderline unusable.
Takes forever to go though menu's and add destination address's
same. gf used to wonder why i went mental over it. then she used it one day and absolutely lost it.
The location of the menu button drives you nuts. accidental hits just as you complete the address (which takes about ten minutes to do. and no off button or auto off.
Great comments you 2. Very helpful for someone who's considering buying this GPS unit. Unlike the phone vs GPS debate above.
Bought MY60T from OW for 184…
The MY series Navman's are useless, would rather use a Melway's directory. Map's are way out of date and roads that exitsed for 20 years not included. Before anyone starts, there are two map suppliers (Whereis and Sensis) and both have massive flaws. Menus are laggy and unintelligent. I bought a no name Chinese GPS on eBay, change the software to IGO and haven't had a drama since. You can get IGO for iPhone and it is cheaper than Tom Tom etc.
For the phone vs GPS debate, i can guarantee you, that the phone will ring at the crucial time you need to know where to turn!
I'm a noob on this, just wondering that when you change the Chinese GPS's software to IGO do you need to pay anything?
Depends where you look. If your moral standards are of the utmost, no it isn't free, otherwise yes.. Most Chinese branded ones off ebay will come preloaded with IGO and most will say latest maps. There are sites to get your regular map updates.
I paid around $65 for a 5 inch one off ebay. Works better than the last 4 Navman's i had.
If you want to get creative you can install TomTom on these as well.
The MY series Navman's are useless
I have never found Navman easy to use.
After owning a tomtom it is a long way ahead of the navman.
there are two map suppliers (Whereis and Sensis)
Yes there are 2 map suppliers however they are not Whereis and Sensis. Whereis and Sensis are the same company.
Sensis owns Whereis and Whereis provides the maps to Sensis (Tele Atlas who is owned by tomtom then buys the maps from Sensis to use on tomtom devices)Navteq is the other map provider in Australia. This is where Garmin, Magellan and other GPS companies buy their maps from.
Stand corrected. I thought i had got it wrong. Navman now use Navteq maps. Still useless though!
Does anyone still buy these ???
I stopped using mine late last year and now only use my iPhone for navigation…
