SD Card Recommendations for New Nikon D3500

Hello everyone,

Recently just bought the Nikon D3500 with the 18-55mm lens kit for $454.
Just wondering what SD card you might recommend. I will be taking mainly photos.
I was thinking a 64gb capacity to be safe. New to photography.

Thanks in advance

Just check the max speed and max supported capacity of the camera and buy a suitable card, it is useless to buy a high speed card if the camera is not supported. I had a Nikon D5200 sometime ago and had always used cheap 16GB and 32GB SanDisk cards. For me, even a 16GB card was enough for one trip

If only for photos you don't need super high speeds. But if you're shooting video or anticipating shooting shots on burst mode that's when it really makes a difference!

      • what I meant to say is, let's say camera's max supported speed is X and card's max supported speed is Y, any scenario where Y > X is limited by camera's max read/write speed of X

If you can get a used 35mm f/1.8G lense, fantastic little standard lense for DX cameras :D worth every penny, Cheers mate!

    • So what will this do differently compared to the 18-55m?
In which scenarios would I pick which one?
Thanks so much for your help!

      • f/1.8 allows more light to enter the lens, so if you see that bokeh/blurred effects on photographs that's how to achieve it, but it's prime lens (i.e. fixed distance) means you need to physically move around to zoom in and out, but the much nicer photo quality it's worth it. I think yours around f/2.8?

I have a Sony mirrorless and I got myself 32gb micro SD Extreme (yes, the micro one, in case I don't need it for camera anymore in the future I can use it for mobile phones), anyone would say that's a bad idea but it's enough for me.

I'd say get the Extreme, Extreme pro, etc version if you plan to do continuous shooting. 64gb should be enough.

        Enjoy your new camera!

The D3500 is pretty slow, so I wouldn't worry about a fast SD card even for continuous shooting.

Heck, a half decent sketch artist is faster.

I second the 35mm lens suggestion, I use it together with my 70-200mm and the 18-55mm kit lens never gets used.
The question should be when SHOULDN'T I use the 35mm? Not, when you should.

I have this lens and it is one of my favourites. The F1.8 is a little too soft, so I often try and shoot at F2.0 to 2.8. For the price every I think every DX owner should have this lens.

  • Sandisk Ultra 64gb is a budget option or Sandisk Extreme Pro 64GB for faster performance (such as when copying files to a computer).

When you take a photo, it is stored in camera's built-in (limited) buffer and then it is written to the SD card in the background so it doesn't matter too much which card you choose (in this scenario). Video is another story but I don't think D3500 can do 4k anyway.

I would recommend you to get a second SD card as backup (could be smaller capacity) in case you break/lose your main SD card during a holiday or an event.

As someone who goes overboard with taking photos I honestly think a 16GB+ stick is fine if you're regularly downloading. You don't want your photos sitting on an SD card that might become corrupted or lost so download regularly.

I have a D5600 and photos are about 25MB in NEF (RAW) format.. So a 16GB stick will give you ~625 photos.

Don't worry on the size so much, just get something that is a good brand and has a decent write speed.
