PayPal Reversed a Payment but Have Taken More than They Should Have

I sold an Xbox code this month on eBay for $40. I received $38.26 (PayPal took $1.76 in fees) The transaction was cancelled within minutes for being 'unauthorized'. I hadn't sent anything yet. No biggie.

Here's the problem. The funds were reversed the other day. I just checked my account and noticed that I have an 'adjusted payment' of -$40.00. PayPal didn't just simply reverse the payment. They just straight up withdrew $40 from my account.

Why on Earth have they taken more then what I received? Like how refunds work, they should have reversed the $38.26 payment I received and then returned the $1.76 cut they took to the buyer. Oh but no, they expect me to pay the fee that they took, so they can keep the fee for an unauthorized transaction they failed to stop from happening?

The fact that they're trying to pull this off is making my blood boil.

  • Relax. Paypal are pretty disorganised and make mistakes all the time. I think your chances of getting that sorted out properly are high if you explain it calmly.

Call them up.. but in my previous experience, the "calm" bit is the problem because you'll be wishing you were anywhere else but talking to these morons

Well, it's not a nice thing to find on Christmas Day. Sure, it's only a couple of bucks. But it's the principle and audacity of the matter that bother me. I have emailed emailed them in the meantime.

Sorry but no. Paypal are the largest online payment processor and they use computers to do everything.

The "mistakes" are always in PayPal's favour I imagine.

      • Well yes, they do make mistakes. I contacted them regarding the default funding source when there are forex funds available and they completely backflipped their statement of their policy when shown they were wrong. They don't even know their own policy.

Paypal have given themself to much authority. I avoid where possible.

  • Go in ebay and cancel the sale and that should reverse the fee

Its ebay and paypal not communicating

    • It has already been cancelled by PayPal, and the funds have already been withdrawn. I have emailed them.

  • Maybe the $1.70 was ebay fees, and the paypal (including fees) was done correctly, but you still paid ebay their cut of the sale.
Its risky going against ebay/paypal policy. I knowingly did it, and turned out fine. I understand that if it hadn't turned out fine though, I could have lost out. As soon as I tried to list on ebay a digital game, I received error messages saying only authorized sellers are allowed to sell digital content. I adjusted the wording of listing so it wouldn't get the digital content sale error.
Just dont worry about the $1.70 and be grateful you weren't scammed out of the code and all your sale money (which happened to many people).

    • eBay fees are sorted out through ebay. PayPal has no authorisation to charge me for eBay fees. Even automated payments are done separately.

It's definitely either them messing up or screwing me over. I believe it's the latter. As I said, it's not so much the money. It's the principle of the matter. It's them thinking they can do this being in the position they're in.
