Waiting in Line at Petrol Stations When a Bowser Is Free

I never understand why motorists queue at petrol stations just so the bowser is on the same side as the fuel cap. Other bowsers are available with no cars. Why?

I have never been to a petrol station in my 25 years of driving which doesn't have a hose that will reach the opposite side of the car.

If you are careful with the rubber hose it will not mar your duco.

What do you do at the petrol station?

I wait for an available bowser on the fuel cap side

I pick the first available bowser and laugh at others queuing

It's Christmas day - why are you worried about this?

    Thanks for that… Merry Christmas

  • You know what I've never actually thought about this and I always go to the correct side as my fuel cap. Hmmm. Merry Christmas!

While I'm aware that the hose should be long enough to reach the other side of the car, I don't like it possibly dragging across the paint. I wouldn't know if the hose had picked up any crud on it. I guess I don't want to go through the trouble of having to be careful.

OTOH, I'm perfectly capable of driving around the bowser and come from the other side to take advantage of an empty pump next to my fuel cap.

Come to BP Greenfield Park in NSW; their new bowsers' hoses are pretty short; you'd struggle to reach the opposite side

  • Which leads to the other question. Why aren’t all fillers located on the same side of a car. Then we could have stations that only fill from that side and not have this problem.

I go to the nearest free pump and drag the hose across if necessary.

because each pump would only do one car, not two.

I usually have to cue to get the right fuel.

    • Lebanese cue?

  • If you have a smaller car and park in just the right spot, yeah it should reach most of the time without issue. But if it doesn't (you have a large van, parked crooked, pulled up to far, the hose is shorter than you thought, etc.), it's a hassle. Or you can just wait in the queue and have a spectacularly enjoyable experience.

Pull out the phone and look on ozbargain while waiting.

    • Actually, I pull out my phone and log my details on Fuelly so I can see the long-term trends on my vehicle.

Sssssshhh. Dont tell anyone, makes it easier to find a pump.

If am able to, will reverse in so cap is on correct side

  • but 90% of cars have access on passengers side

I think this is appropriate here.

  • Off topic, one servo had petrol at 1.46 yesterday, opposite side of road 1.12, why do people fill up at the expensive one, is it laziness or lack of observation, or so rich they don’t care

Fuel card. They're not paying for it.

      • That makes sense

    • Was it the same brand?

  • +2

Probably common knowledge, but I only recently found out there's an arrow on the dashboard near the little fuel pump symbol that shows you which side the fuel cap is on! For those who didn't notice/realise, have poor memories or other.

In the newer stations the hose is ridiculously short - I have been caught out before.

  • Why do you need to refuel Reindeer today anyway?

How about the issue of people who don't move their car up far enough while filling up which means that whoever is behind them can't reach their pump properly

    • that could be me… because the LPG pump is often in the middle so I park really far forward but still half blocks the pump behind =D

      • But of course that is a reasonable excuse. Amazing though how many park too far forward or backward…
Then there are the ones who park in the middle, miles away from their chosen pump :OS
Probably a good time to mention those who go to get milk or something and park at a pump when basic store/shop parking is available.

  • I'd fill up at Coles Express, there's never a queue to worry about

  • You can tell which side of the car the filler is by where the fuel gauge is pointing

Hahahah… this is good advice… “if” your car supports it. 2 out of my 3 cars, do not.

An alternative is to flip the remote release and look in the mirrors. Doesn’t work well without a remote release though.

Or you can just know where it is.

  • I just wait the 30 seconds to 3 minutes once a week for the browser to become free, I haven't found this waiting to have a major impact on my life as 98 times out of 100 I dont even have to wait the 30 seconds.

Good philosophy. Minor delays make no difference to most things in life.

I choose to use an available pump because reaching the hose across doesn’t cost me any appreciable extra effort - but saves me fuel waiting for an available pump.

Seen this idiocy a few times…..

Car queues up…. gets to and parks at bowser, gets out, locks car, proceeds to service building, gets milk (and/or fags), queues up, pays with card. Goes back to car, unlocks, climbs in, adjusts hair & handbag contents, checks mirror to see cars waiting behind, starts car, one more mirror check for hair. Does up seat belt, checks side mirror, leaves.

WTF park at bowser if you're not getting fuel???

Because it's a servo, you have to. The other parking bays aren't there for that.

So true. The level of self-absorption of people is at times very disheartening.
Great to see though when stations put the air/water bay(s) well away from the pumps or traffic flow to and fro' said pumps.
Not always possible, but I've seen some really well planned out petrol stations and for the sake of balance I surely see some
very considerate drivers (parkers) out there from time to time. Guess the trick is, is to raise ones game and not lower it to others.
Can be a little more challenging when dealing with the seemingly inconsiderate on those hot and humid days of summer!
Best to strengthen our patience muscles rather than to cave in to raging. We should be grateful we know the difference I suppose.

  • Some retractable hoses are actually quite difficult to be pulled and dragged over the vehicle all the way to the other side. Especially if you are not tall, have weak arms and also driving a SUV!

    • I had the swivel thingy at the top come off once, trying to reach the other side of my car. Luckily it missed me, my wife and the car.

Next time look up, imagine that hitting you on the head!!!!

(it was a few years back at a private servo, it may have been antique equipment)

  • I know the hose can reach, but I don't want the hose scratching my car.
