Unknown Call from The 'government'

Hi Ozbargainers, I would be grateful if you guys can work out this for me.

I got a call from 061280058465 stating that he is from the gov and I have a case assigned to him(his ascent is so strong that most of the time I dont know what the case is about..)

Anyone had a call from this no. before? It's not a gov no. is it. How anoying is that…

Probably a loser trying to get cash out of you.
Block the number and keep living life.

    Merry Christmas!

Might have been Mathias Cormann and an administrative error.

Who is your Daddy and what does he do?

    Scam

A handy tip is to always use a search engine to check the number

Total scam. I got these heaps of times a while back. Now, all I'm getting is robo-calls with the same message. Not that I enjoy having the calls, but every once in a while, when I have a bit of free time, I enjoy stringing them along and hearing all the absurd crap they spout. Sometimes, pointing out their inconsistencies makes them so defensive and ends up making them a sputtering mess. Good for S!@#s and Giggles.

Now though, with the robo-calls that make ME call them back, just not going to happen.

  • LOL I wasted 5 mins listenning to him (without getting any points…)

Im gonna take a guess that you owe the ATO $$$$, in which the only acceptable payment is via itunes gift card.

  • He probably did, but his ascent is so bad that I doubt he can work for gov with his English…So I cut the call and post a Q here

      accent

      • 10/10 :)

      • I think the call was from a government jet taking off. It can get interfere with phone reception.

      Ascent as in the car?

        Or mountain

  • https://www.thenumberingsystem.com.au/#/number-register/sear… lets you lookup the provider(this time it's Verizon) for the number. Some scammers spoof their number. I'm guessing this scammer is using a VoIP number. It seems the scammer is blocking calls from numbers that they haven't called (I tried calling from a silent number and by displaying my spare number). I've tried reporting numbers to Verizon and they don't do anything.

  • Did they guy ever mentioned your name?

Some 0612 number left a voice message on my mother's phone, I didn't listen to the message but when I googled 0612 it says it's a fake UK phone number:

  • There is a easy way of knowing whether a call is scam or real. Say you're busy and can't talk right now and hang up. Later Google the number of the company and call them back. If it's real they should let you know if there's a problem.

  • lol

  • "stating that he is from the gov…"

    And he's here to help?

Srsly though, which govt. department? What is his office address? Ask him for 2 form of identification and if he scams his way through all of that then tell him you will only answer question put in writing to your home address. But, meh clearly a scammer.

Why bother wasting your and our time on this ???
    Merry Christmas everyone :)

  • At least you sort of understood the bloke. Every time I get a call from a random number it’s in Chinese.

Tell him you are still waiting for your pizza… you ordered it 20 minutes ago..
If he says he is not from the pizza shop totally ignore him and keep going on about your pizza….
Say if you put bloody pineapple on it this time you are not paying…
Just keep going on about your pizza.. dont stop.
Recently this had a scammer so rattled he had his supervisor call back… so I stuck it up him about how happy I was with my pizza being late and possibly cold and how fed up I was….. no matter what he said I only spoke about my bloody pizza….
He hung up… prob still scratching his head… he he he…

Can't stop the bastards so have fun with them…

  • I have a recording app and have a lot of fun with them. Now, ATO does not contact people by phone 1st off, so if they try it, it's a con.

    • Yes they do but you always have the option of calling them back if you're suspicious.

      • +1

Yes they do call people. But they will also will tell you the reason why and it should make sense.. They will always provide you with a way to verify their identity.

Set up selective call forwarding (through your Telco) for that number to the ATO. Or the police. Or a scamwatch reporting service. Or to themselves.

  • The other half got a dodgy call about problems with our Telstra internet. As soon as he pointed out we didn't have Telstra internet the guy immediately hung up. Normally we screen this sort of rubbish on our home phone but this numbnut called his mobile number. He was busy, otherwise he would've had fun leading him on - the less time they then have to try and scam someone else.

We got the chinese one on our answering machine, at one point. Mostly when they hit an answering machine they just hang up but this was a Robocall one.
