Cheapest Computer Setup That Will Run Oculus Rift

Could someone please recommend a cheap setup, where I can do the work myself, to upgrade it to a PC that can run the Oculus Rift?

I’ve seen those deals pop up on those refurbished Dell computers a lot but I have no idea what I’d need.

My partner is okay with tech so he could install upgraded ram or graphics card etc

Thank you

  • What you're saying is pretty vague. It depends what you mean by "run" the Oculus Rift and what you intend to play. Realistically, VR can be very hard to drive, the reason being is that the refresh rate has to be much higher than the standard 60 fps most monitors run at (to avoid motion sickness and somewhat look more like reality, really) and you have to draw two images (one for each eye).

You're not going to have much luck with any of the Dell discount PC's. They won't have the sort of power that you're after. Realistically, you'd want to be looking at something with a mid-range CPU (at least) and somewhat of a high-end GPU.

Ultimately, it depends on what your budget is, but I'd say that around $1500 would be the sweet spot for a good VR experience (if you can't spend more than around $800 or so, you're better off just getting a PSVR or not dabbling in VR at all). You'd really want a top-end GPU, something like a 1080 Ti would be perfect. Here's one for a good price: https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Gtx-1080ti-asus-strix-11gb/35255…)

CPU choice is hard. Budget king would be a Ryzen 5 2600, but you're looking to push more frames, so perhaps an Intel Core i5 9600K might be worth the investment. If you can come up with a budget, it'd be easier to recommend things.

  • What Are the specs of your current PC? Is it a desktop or laptop?

    • I have an all in one, i5, 8GB ram, 2.5GHz.. it isn’t too bad, but it has no space for a graphics card so it has to go.

  • I think one of the Techfast PCs that pop up on here would be a good fit. One with like a ryzen 5 2600 and gtx 1060 6gb is perfectly fine for VR. The setup I use has an even weaker GPU, and it is absolutely fine with me. More horsepower is better, but for a decent experience you dont need the absolute top end stuff.
