Borders Admin Sale 20-40% off price - only @ closing stores

54

Just checked my email. Borders are closing down some of their stores and are reducing prices 20-40% off. I'm not sure if anything ends up being ozbargain worthy since their 'original' prices are usually pretty crap and I haven't personally checked it out, but I found some really good stuff from their 60% off dvds from last time.

Hoping this will be similar or that eventually if sales aren't as much as they hoped for before closing, they'll slash prices even more. If anyone finds anything really good, let us know!

Don't know when this ends… I'm assuming til closing?

A&R was 50% off, and got even more as closure neared.

They're closing within the next 8 weeks: Chatswood, Hornsby, Kotara, Macarthur Square, Macquarie Centre, Parramatta, Tuggerah, Brisbane, Garden City, Camberwell, Doncaster, Geelong, Highpoint, South Yarra, South Wharf and Adelaide. You would most likely find yourself buying books from The Book Depository at a cheaper price. It's up to you.

However, Borders don't sell just books; you can also find stationery, cards and magazines discounted by 20%.

Magazines were comparatively almost non-existent in Melbourne Central weeks ago, they had not been replenished for a while (and they are not listed for closure).

      • is that your reason for negging?

Whole article could be summed by saying even though its a sale still check booko.

I went to one of the 75% off A&R sale and the prices were very good but had nothing I wanted. Hopefully someone posts if and when these sales turn in 75% off.

  • +1

Prices were still very high even with 20% off the books i saw today. Although they did have a few books that were very cheap but not many.

    • +2

Yeah, 20% is nothing. They had 20% and 30% off sales even when they weren't failing. Hopefully as the closures draw nearer the sale will improve.

      • +1

Well they did have signs up saying everything must go and the shop i went to was so big it has 2 levels full of books so obviously they are going to have to reduce prices a lot more to sell everything.

  • Went to Camberwell Borders today. Most stocks are 20% only. Considering the borders online offers 10% plus free delivery. Really don;t think it is bargain unless you are able to find sth that is on 50% off. I will wait till the closing date before revisiting it again. Hope my Lonely Planet Japan will be down to $20 or even less.

So …closer to the real retail value of the books. Probably still cheaper online.

A "closing down sale" with things more expensive than their normal operating prices is definitely NOT a bargain.

The administrators have given themselves 8 weeks so these are just the starting prices … the prices WILL come down further …we'll see 50% off … and then higher discounts when only the rubbish is left.

Never trust an administrator, other than to make themselves a nice fat paycheck.

All we have so far are Borders usual expensive prices in administrators' clothing (and the quality of the stock is already significantly depleted).

Agreed. Shocker of an excuse for a "sale".

for Borders RRP,40% off is nothing.

    • Actually its depends imo. For some 40% off makes them in line with booko's cheapest price but others still remain pricey.

If its only @ closing stores … God help the others!

    • Ok so you had more to say - but chances are that this is good to post now so we can keep on further price reductions later.

Sorry jug-head I didn't see your post above yesterday asking my reason for negging (which I rarely do). It is that based on my purchasing experience that Borders prices have been so high that - generally and in round numbers - unless they discount by at least 40%, and preferably more, it is not worth going out of my way to visit a store. And that to promise 20%-40% when they are closing down with depleted stocks, was no better than many sales they had prior to administration which didn't attract enough buyers because they weren't competitive. (As always there will be some exceptions.)

I'll give you one clear example, I could give you a dozen more (& others have in OzBargain over the months):
Last Friday week my son asked me to get him a book (23 Things They Dont Tell You About Capitalism). Borders didn't have it in any store; Readings and Dymocks had it in paperback for $29.95.

It arrived this morning from the Book Depository, UK at a cost of $19.95 post free - 50% LESS AND IN HARDBACK. (Printed in the USA.)

So under the terms of this "bargain" I would have had to pay - at best - over 10% more for a significantly inferior product (if they had it) so for me that is no bargain. It would have taken much longer to obtain it from Borders as they didn't have it in stock.

I know there is nothing new in this post but I am just giving you my explanation in a single post.

… and today, based on booko, Borders Online have the hardback on sale for $38.95 - more than double Book Depository US's s price, but lower than sister company A&R's $45.95!

  • borders had 30% off cds & books online for this weekend (i bought a few cds at $13each), i think thats alot better than buying crap at 75% off.

I looked around Macqaurie centre and didnt find any bargains. all were cheaper on bookdepository..

its going to be sad to see that place go though. It is a nice store and it was great to go in there on uni breaks and read for free. its about the only decent store in mac centre because apart from that it really is a crappy run down place mostly full of womens fashion :(

  • +2

Yeah in terms of books I'm sure its easy to find cheaper online with the help of booko. But they have movies and CDs also, which is what I'm more interested in since I picked up a whole anime box set for $30. Cheapest I could find online at the time for it was $80+

When is the closing date for the stores?

    • +2

In their email on Thursday they just said "over the next 8 weeks" and currently on their website they say Rouse Hill is closed, the others "T.B.A.".

Borders has just raised the admin sale to 30-40% (to 7 of its 16 stores) and even so as bargain hunters that might not still seem enough.

Stores: Kotara, Parramatta, Tuggerah, Hornsby, Chatswood, Macarthur, Macquarie

  • Just a story: A friend had an Angus & Robertson (Prize) voucher for $200 to spend, so she went into the A&R store on their last day, only to be told "you have to spend $1 for each $1 on the voucher" :((( !!! She asked a customer lady at the counter if she could join her in her purchase, & got about 20 good books for $1 & $2 each. Great idea!
Wait till the last day, if you can get there. Of course, they take all the very good books away- not for sale.

I think it is disgusting that Borders is not accepting gift cards AT ALL! What are the people suppose to do if they still have them?? I would damn well want a refund or be able to use the thing. just another reason I hate gift cards and cash should always be given instead.

  • I have been visiting the local borders to check out bargains lately (craft books). I always used to waste a fair bit of $$$ at borders. I have always found them expensive, but they always had the best range you can see the whole book before purchase (which you can't do on the internet). I have stopped going there in recent months, but with the closure, I thought I'd have a look.

20% off was woeful due to the fact that the books were still too expensive. I bought one book there at 30% off; but the price was still pretty poor. I also don't see them going any lower then 30% off. I wonder what will happen with all the left over stock/crap they have left?
