UPDATE: Price down to $194.99 from $199

Ok guys, my first post was a fail. So here goes another attempt.

Sony WH-CH700N Noise Cancelling Bluetooth Over Ear Headphones $199 + Free Delivery (Amazon AU)
https://www.amazon.com.au/dp/B07CKSY9WP
- 35 Hours battery life
- One touch NFC Pairing and Bluetooth.
- Smartphone App + Voice assistant with firmware update

Not the cheapest its been($179 TGG, $197 Videopro), but only valid deal at the moment.
Cheapest before was around $229 at Videopro and Jerry Norman. If I remember correctly.
Current price at Sony store $249.

From what I've read and heard:
- Weaker noise cancelling than WH-1000XM2,XM3. Will do a decent job with constant droning sounds, less so with people talking/traffic etc.
- But more comfy for people with big ears or big heads.
- Slightly better battery life compared to XM3's (35 Hrs vs 30 Hrs for XM3)
- Cheaper price appealing to those who just use casually/occasionally.
- Sony has an app to adjust EQ to change the sound to your own taste. (I think once you set the eq it saves it inside the headphone, so no matter what you connect the EQ continues to work in custom setting [Please do some research on this as I am not 100%])
- Works wired and wireless.
- Good reviews. 4.3/5 Stars - Sony AU website. But if you want the best noise cancelling at the moment go for XM3.

Im sure other ozbargainers can chime in on user experiences.

  • Good headphones. I got a pair for $150 last Christmas. Love them!

  • Would you be able to confirm the app EQ settings are saved inside the headphone once set?

  • +1

The military only uses the best.

Haha. Any serviceman will tell you that they nearly always use the lowest bidder / supplied by a Politician's cronies gear. Good deal though.

  • $165 at Goodguys commercial site as well WHCH700NB

    • Do they still sell the 1000XM3 for $275 - I wish I had access to the commercial site :(

      • +1

Nope. Only cheaper models such as the MDRXB650B for $83.

        • Thanks for checking mate :)

  • You could get OW to price match for even cheaper!
OR to save a couple bucks more try see if they will match Billy Guyatts: https://www.billyguyatts.com.au/sony-wireless-noise-cancelli…

    Extra $2 off!

    • PS. I know BG is out of stock, but they constantly get in more stock, or you might get lucky and OW doesn't check!

  • A warning - if you lose the 3.5mm cable that comes with them you will most likely be forced into buying a replacement from sony. The opening in the casing to the 3.5mm port is super narrow and the jack itself is recessed - I've been unable to find an aftermarket replacement that works :'(

    • I read that somewhere a few minutes ago.. here it is:

      5.0 out of 5 stars10/10
      12 December 2018
It’s great but I lost the cable so………

      • You can buy one from sony for $70 or an eBay one that says it's from sony for $30. Im still investigating my options but yeah it sucks. One of the best parts of these headphones is the ability to use after the battery is dead - can't do that now though :'(

  • +1

I have the previous iteration of these headphones, MDR-ZX770BN. They're priced for the mid-range and quite decent for what you get.

The noise cancelling works for constant monotone noises like the train and it helps on a bus or plane as well but doesn't completely out the drone.

Sound reproduction is inferior to the top range stuff like the 1000X from the tests I've seen, but they've been good enough for me. I'm no audiophile but I appreciate that the bass doesn't overwhelm the rest of the music.

Regarding the noise cancelling, if you're on a bus that vibrates while idle it can produce an odd result where the noise cancelling is in phase with the vibration and amplifies it instead of reducing it.

The noise cancelling mics also pick up wind and it comes through like when you listen to a video recorded on your phone with strong wind. I dunno if it's attempting to cancel it and failing.

Meanwhile, the mics are rubbish are phone calls and nobody can hear you, so I take them off when receiving a call. But the 1000X is also rubiish at that.

Lastly, the hinges can be a bit creaky sometimes, particularly if you have them on while walking. This problem has thankfully decreased over time.

It sounds mostly like I'm criticising them but I do like these headphones. I don't know if the newer model has fixed or improved on any of those things but any changes seem small apart from the addition of NFC and support for Sony's EQ app.

After two years with these I've upgraded to the 1000XM3, and personally I think you're better off paying the extra $100 (when the 1000XM3 is on sale) for those, but these are still a good cheaper alternative.

Yes Ive heard this is a common with most NC headphones. Last time I read about it was on Audio-Technica model.

      • Yeah, I'd recommend these maybe as a Christmas gift to someone using shitty phone earbuds, but you don't want to shell out $300-$400 for them because they're a mid-range friend or family member and not a top range one.

Or also for yourself if you want to go wireless on a budget, either for convenience or because your phone doesn't have a 3.5mm jack.

I won't get into the debate about the deficiencies of Bluetooth audio, but I'll just say if you're using phone earbuds, the upgrade in sound quality is night and day and you won't want to go back to phone earphones afterwards.

        • Yes I agree with, people who are buying bluetooth will be happy with bluetooth.
Personally I use either wired for headphones, and an old apple tv 3 (optical toslink>dac>speakers) airplay(lossless) for playing through speakers.
No bluetooth or NC equipment owned at all.

And I think what your hearing on the bus is the headphones cancelling out the higher low-frequencies, but the lowest low frequencies make it through the headphones and they sound out of phase, because the higher parts reach that your ears first are being cancelled.

I think if you travel/fly frequently and want that extra peace of mind the 1000XM3's are worth it.
But if you fly once every 6 months or a year, and want to just use it casually. Then you dont want to spend that much if you arent going to put them to heavy use…

If you dont fly often, you really notice the difference. A few years ago I used a really old pair of audio-technica NC earbuds, one with a AAA battery and large controller on cable. and was quite surprised with the NC. Even a few years earlier than that, just a simple pair of over-ear headphones impressed me.
