At Christmas Eve, you just walk up to a phone and dial, or connect to the Telstra Air network and use their free Wi-Fi.

You can find a nearby payphone here: http://envinsaonline.mapinfo.com.au/ppol/

So you don't need a Telstra Sim ?

        • No, this is for payphones only.

            @Hunter54998:

No, this is for payphones only.

@jv: If only there was a link somewhere which contained more information.

        • I've been unable to find the sim slot for Telstra payphone, have not attempted to dismantle one though? lol.

          • +2

@slowFTL: There is no SIM slot. You use coins.

            • @Hunter54998: what coin? what is this thing? are you saying i put coin on my phone instead of sim card?

            • @Hunter54998: Hey! These payphones accept prepaid smartcards which have SIMs on them!

No one sells them anymore though. So long ago.

      • You don’t need to lift the receiver up first, you can just dial and talk with the phone still hung up?

      • Why still the L plate? Edit just realised 1st post….

        • +2

Yeah, I haven't really found much to post until now.

  • Does this work for connecting to the Telstra Air being broadcast from residential ADSL/NBN modems?

    • I am not sure about that, but you could give it a shot when the deal starts.

      • Maybe you could update the deal to say it is for payphones only.

    • from last year's FAQs:
Can I access free Wi-Fi at Fon spots or Telstra Air homespots?
Unfortunately free Wi-Fi at is not available at these hotspots.

Since when we need to pay for Telstra Air WI-FI? Someone clarify a bit mre?

    • +2

Last time I checked Telstra Air only works for Telstra customers who allow Air on their Telstra router's Wi-Fi. ie it's free for Tellstra customers if they don't opt-out.

Could be wrong, I got no use out of it.

You have to be a Telstra subscriber.

    • It was about 2 years that you have had to pay for Telstra Air WI-FI if NOT a customer.
You need to enable online or Phone Telstra to activate on your account.
Disable WiFi on your modem at home to lock out people trying to use this….

Where do you find a Public Telstra phone that works these days? mmmmmmmmmmm
      ……….rhetorical question……………

      • +2

I know it's a rhetorical question but I so far have not found a broken payphone.

      • There's still quite a few Telstra payphones around the Sydney CBD.
BTW, I even still have a handkerchief with a pocket for a 20c piece sewn into the corner in case I need to make a call home in an emergency.

  • I've been with Telstra for 10 years and have access to Telstra Air, honestly, it's only worked about 1% of the time. It's utter trash!

    • Have you tried a different router?

      • +1

Do you mean different location? I have, lots from CBD to south east suburbs, never works

  • I saw this on my local payphone today…which is always empty and seems a waste of space. I'm wondering who still uses payphones?

  • I can see the queues forming outside the payphones as we speak..

  • Ye it's a little too hot to go stand outside today……

  • How long can you chat for…. one, two hours for free, when dialling a mobile number ?
