I know lots of ppl already went through similar process and got great deals, will make it short
Background: live in QLD, bought a new home recently so need electricity in new place and renew electricity plan for current address before we move. The plan was with origin 21% usage and supply.
Action 1: called origin in Nov, was told best plan was 16% on usage only. didn't bother so hang up.
Action 2: called AGL next day to transfer current address and sign up new address, got some credit and flybuy points due to switching.
Action 3: I didn't take action, Origin called me to offer their 'NEW' plan which is 25% usage and supply asking me to stay. Accepted, so I have to call AGL to cancel the current address transfer
Action 4: called AGL to cancel transfer (ask to be transferred to cancellation department, don't waste time on the 1st staff or you will be escalated few times before the best offer), was offered 30% on usage only.
Calculation:
Usage: AGL 28.05 * 0.7 = 19.635. Origin 26.62 * 0.75 = 19.965. AGL won by 0.33 cents
Daily charge: AGL 108.9/day, Origin 124 * 0.75 = 93. Origin won by 15.9 cents/day
So looks like its cheaper to go with AGL if usage is more than 15.9/0.33 = 48.1818181818/day
My decision if anyone interested: switch my current place to AGL to honour the credit and flubuys points (flybuys points already added to my flubuy account), new place with origin as we wont use that much electricity:)
P.s. Origin's discount is valid for 1 year and AGL offered 2 years.
I changed to Alinta and Origin rang me and offered the same 25% off. Was ever so slightly cheaper so stayed with Origin who forwarded me to Alinta call centre to cancel.
Alinta was sort of pushy, just give it a go and stay with us was repeated lots.
About only reason to stay was no fee for paying with credit card and 2 year vs 1 year plan.
I assume there will still be competition in market in a year's time so can change again, so don't see the big deal about 2yr vs 1yr plans.
