Same. Every year I think "just one more year, it's bound to turn shit and I won't use the lifetime"….
Cancel for part year refund (?), then buy lifetime pass perhaps.
Still undecided if it's worth it or not…
yeah i'm in the same boat, if it had native google home integration i'd probably be all over it
I don't think I'll be able to utilise any of the feature - but given the software is so so so awesome, I think it's worth supporting the developers even for the free features we have.
Hardware decoding was the big thing for me. My NAS isn't powerful enough to run 2 streams using just the CPU.
What exactly is this?
Will this help the current issue I have of streaming videos from pc to tv via wifi over 18mbit seems to buffer non stop, so i usually reduce the quality to 2-5mbit :(
Check the server running plex, if you decode with the CPU chances are it is running at 100% CPU which means you will experience lag
@fishball: So to decode via GPU rather than CPU you require the Plex Pass?
Currently have a 7700k CPU and a 1080Ti GPU, I would of thought the CPU could handle up to 4k content streaming to TV?
@annimali8559499: Oh u're running it on a full blown PC that should be fine. I use a synology NAS which only has a cpu, no gpu. Plex pass unlocks the hardware decoding on the cpu.
Having said that I think the hardware decoding (be it cpu or gpu) is 100% locked behind plex pass but can't confirm for you.
Seems like you are struggling because of the 18mbit wifi. That seems really low.
@fishball: 18mbit was referring to the video quality sorry, currently using a 110mbit wifi connection (5G router + NBN) yet 4k videos never seem to work (constantly buffer)
So was hoping but getting Plex Pass it will unlock the hardware decoding which could resolve this if anyone can confirm?
thanks!
@annimali8559499: I would recommend logging into your server and check if the file is be decoded when playing the file it's under status.
I would expect your trying to play h265. If you are trying to play h265 to a device that does not have a h265 decoder your server has to do the decoding for that remote device, your hardware looks more then adequate
In my experience my CPU is unable to handle a live stream of h265 even with the Plex pass because my CPU is so old i7 3770k, the CPU igpu does not have a h265 decoder, I need to replace the CPU or install a dedicated gpu to move into 4k content, but for me I am in no rush.
i think its more a wifi issue. i have a new sony x90f and a nvidia shield both would lag / buffer over wifi (i have a 50/20 fiber to the house connection) conversely to what i read online my tv did better at the buffering than the shield.
plugged it in with an ethernet cable and zero lag / buffer even when playing a 70gig file.ymmv
@ellski: good to know Ellski thanks :)
Others than Mobile Sync are there any other real benefits?
For me it's was the following
Mobile app unlock.
Remote sync.
GPU decoding.
User management.
I like the software, so support it.Cheers!
I have it for the fine-grained user control within Plex Home, and the Live TV & DVR:

Id fire the marketing guy. There was a perfect opportunity to do a 'PLEX THE HALLS' gag for the sale :)
You mean like the email that they sent out?
So it’s OP that mangled the title lol.
In case you didn't get the news - Inbox by Gmail is shutting down in a few months…
I highly recommend getting a Plex pass if you have bought into the Amazon Alexa ecosystem. I don't want to pay for Amazon Music, so I get my echo devices to play music from my plex library using the Plex Alexa skill.
How accurate do you have to be with the filename to get Alexa to play the right track, given how obscure songs names can be?
Well accuracy hasn't been a problem for me (so far) as long as I get the query syntax right:
- "Alexa, ask Plex to play me songs by <ArtistName>")
- "Alexa, ask Plex to play me some music"
- "Alexa, ask Plex to play me <SongName>"
If I get the syntax wrong, it usually tries querying Amazon's music service or whatever you have set as your default music service. You can't set Plex to be the default music service.
Does it do Google ecosystem too? (Home mini)
"Code not valid" here
With the Plex pass, does it allow the app to be installed/used on multiple devices (e.g. my phone, wife's phone, kids tablets)?
Yes, I have it installed on my mobile, wife's phone and both our kids tables.
Ugh… I'm already a yearly plex member, I wish there is a way to 'upgrade' to the lifetime membership
