Boost Mobile Network Coverage

I recently switched over from Aldi to Boost mobile and haven't been impressed with the coverage.

I thought that in terms of MVNOs that use Telstra, Boost utilises the full Telstra network while others (Aldi, Woolies, Belong, etc.) don't have access to the full Telstra network?

Since moving to Boost, the 4G reception in my work kitchen is essentially non-existent while I haven't noticed any improvements with the reception on the train to/from work. Sydney metro area by the way.

Has anyone else experienced this?

  • Not sure, but I think Telstra has better coverage on average, but that is not the same thing as having better coverage at a certain location. For example I can go out to country towns and only telstra (and boost) works, none of the others do.

But if you're somewhere like a metro city, it typically comes down to the radio tower and location etc, you might be closer to a Optus one then a Telstra one and get better Optus coverage.

Sydney metro can also be spotty, in particular chatswood to central I find my internet cuts out every time (this is purely telstra, not boost), though central to parra I don't typically have any issues. Could just be the normal coverage around.

    • Boost and Aldi are both on Telstra, but Boost is meant to be better than Aldi, so I don't understand how the coverage can be worse on Boost.

      • I think the "full" network means access to some extra bands in some areas.
In regional locations it definitely means access to towers where there is no Voda/Optus competition.
I think in metro areas it also delivers extra bands that are supposed to improve in-building reception (700MHz I guess).
It might be that the preferred 700MHz bands around your workplace are saturated (not around Barangaroo, by any chance?) but the other 3G/4G bands used by ALDI are comparatively uncrowded.

When I worked near Wynyard the Telstra bands on Telechoice were hopeless as all the bankers etc. use that network. Out at Green Square it is the Voda network that is swamped. I think the best bet is to just try the different networks and find the one that works best.
