Suggestions for winter clothing?

Looking for winter clothing to withstand -15 to -24 degrees Celsius in Harbin “Ice city” in China?

Was looking at the $99 Mac pac halo with some thermals and another overcoat

Went to Kathmandu and they said they didn’t have any clothing rated to those temperatures and recommended specialist jackets costing a few thousand

Ideally don’t want to wear heaps of layers, what’s the best bang for buck without layering too much?

Thermals from here and buy jackets and other items there if you want best bang for buck.

Why don't you wait and buy in China? Clothing about 10th cost there compared to Aus. Also will have full range of clothes to choose from rather than us cause of summer.

Will it be cheaper the $100 halo down jacket? Not sure of the quality over there too

      • Answer-Yes. Bought lots of clothes there. Quality ok, if are careful before buy. Given 70% of clothes come there - no difference from Australia. How been to china before or a couch surfer?

        • I will buy my outer coat there.. got the jacket for the meantime

          • @Fat Horny Ghost: Just also negotiate hard. Also check quality that they are not selling you a second. Otherwise, will find prices very cheap.

            • @kizashi: Unfortunately I am not a good negotiator and I can’t tell the difference between goose down jackets.. don’t want to end up ripped off with cardboard inside my jackets lol

              • @Fat Horny Ghost: start at 30% their asking price and do not pay any more than half asking price. Down jackets are everywhere over there. Check stiching etc, on quality. Look at quite a few stalls and do not buy at first one, and will able to get idea of prices, and quality of what to look for. When decide, don't be afraid to walk away, they will probably call you back and agree on your price you offered (common asian tactic).

  • A jumper

    • price includes battery + charger ?

  • Just layer up.

  • It is about layers to keep warm you dont need those specialised gear unless you are going on expeidition.
Wear a base layer, a mid layer and an outer layer and keep less skin exposed. that is the standard way to keep warm.

  • its not that bad in habin suggest a good pair of boots thats about it

    • damn you stupid sexy naked Flanders

  • Good thermals, heavy full wool jumper, good jacket bought in China made for their climate. Good warm boots one size bigger than your feet with heavy socks. Most likely to get frostbite on your toes.

  • I personally suggest it needs to be likely a speical unit force uiniform to cover the whole head, the clothing have all good recommendation from other members, however, the head and hands needs the same protection too. I did personally be in Nepal in 1999, the cold there is not like the snow time in Australia, it's likely niddle into the skin till the bone.

  • I would go to haerbin every new years (for 4 years) . I never had any specialist clothing. Get some thermals and layer up on socks and jumpers. Never had an issue. Don't waste money on special clothing. Also clothing is not that cheap in China, even after bargaining you can still get cheaper here from a legit store if you know when things are on sale.

  • Thanks for all the comments. Ended up only buying China thick thermals (5cm thick) as my warmest uni qld ones weren't good enough for under -15 degrees and Macpac halo down along with wool socks and uggboots, scarf, gloves and headgear. Didnt even need my outer coat for -20 degrees.
