New/ Newish Car Budget 20k - 30k

First time poster.

Wanting to get a car by the end of the year.

Currently eyeing the
Honda Civic RS (2017 model) with 15000km on the odo (Dealer asking for 28.9k excluding government charges)

or

an all-new Kia Cerato Sport + (According to the website it's going for around 26k drive away)

Tried to get the Civic RS down to 26k earlier today with no luck.

Went into Kia noble, the dealership had a much nicer atmosphere to it. Arranged for a test drive tomorrow.

Is there anything about the Kia I should know about beforehand, its got some pretty good reviews online.

With buying a new car, am I able to ask the dealer to go further down on their already discounted price? if so, generally by how much?

thanks.

  • Personally I would go the Civc RS, but the Kia 7 year warranty is a big plus for the Cerato.

If I was in your shoes I would probably get a new corolla.

    • New Corolla looks great. But that cvt and 3 year warranty. Hmmm

      • Cvt is decent, and the 2.0L has a 1st gear (launch gear), hybrid doesn't.

And off the record, you can claim warranty up to 5yrs cough

        Corolla recall on CVT models…

        • I was curious how long before that came out šŸ˜‚ yep roughly 1100 cars nationally.
And they're all cvt, so correction is all 2.0L models, hybrid are unaffected

    • I would go Cerato over corolla or civic.

      • Lol

        • ?

          • @brendanm: I'm not sure if you meant it as a joke.

            • @Colombian: Why would it be meant as a joke? The Kia is an excellent car, Honda's are ok but parts are expensive, and the car is more expensive to start with. Corollas are massively overrated, Toyota are living off old their old reputation. The CVT is average, the last few I drove (not the very latest model) all had a vibration at 80kmh, and the seats were extremely uncomfortable.

Check the specs for what you get with a base corolla compared to a base cerato.

Kia is the cheapest, has longest warranty and has a proper auto.

I would wait till jan/feb next year, all cars turn older then no matter if brand new, at start of each year. It is based on build date. Should be a good position to negotiate a good deal. All all manufacturers know this and will start discounting to move 2018 stock. Advertised price is never bottom line and at least 1 to 1.5 thousand in deal. Second hand much more. But also depends on trade in/finance or cash price. Dealer mades profit on finance, on your trade in also. Cash price you are able to real discount of any ofsets he his moving to made deal sound attractive. ie give you a good trade in price but nothing off car buying price.

Months ago, i got a brand new SUV HR-V VTi-s AUTO from Essendon Honda with 7 years Warranty.
They asked for $32300 drive away price. After bagain I paid only $27500. ( more than $4000 less ).
Never believe what they tell you.stick to your budget and tell them you need to quote with other dealer.
with 30K you can get a brand new Honda.Do your home work first & save $.
    good luck

    • Does it drive ok? Iā€™m looking at this too. Just read a lot of negative reviews?

Since july I cant see any problem . except the GPS a bit weird.

      • What I like is it roomy.

    HOnda more reliable than Kia.

    • These days all cars (Japanese, Thailand or Korean) are equally reliable. There is always a one odd lemon on each kind.
Honda more expensive to service and parts are expensive but better resale value, because people assume they are better?

Current Mazda 3 or wait for the new one next year.

The Civic has better performance but there have been some mentions of oil dilution issues with the 1.5T that you might want to look out for.
The Cerato is great value with plenty of features however, the engine outputs are very mediocre if that matters to you.

Have you had a look at the Hyundai Elantra SR Turbo?

  • Corolla would have a higher resale value after 3 years comparing to the Kia and Honda, i reckon.
