McDonald's Monopoly Giveaway

Hey bargainers, first time posting long time stalker here. I was thinking about the McDonald's Monopoly scheme that seems to do so well and realised I have never actually heard about anyone winning anything more significant than meal. I know it's easy to get 2 of the 3 tickets but now I'm starting to think the third and final piece doesn't actually exist. Anyone know otherwise?otherwise

  • Considering everything that’s happening around the world at the moment, I wouldn’t put it past McDonald’s to do that (as in it wouldn’t surprise me), however I do have a sense that they probably do make the third piece, it’s probably just incredibly hard to find.

You also have to assume that the person who gets that rare piece is actually playing. They may just be the one off maccas person who gets it a few times a year and doesn’t care and throws it out. Or worse, it could have been someone drunk who couldn’t open it properly!

      • That’s a great point, hadn’t even considered that.

Maccas was forced to cough up to avoid a class action lawsuit in the aftermath of the Jerry Jacobson scam. There's also a lot more oversight now. I highly doubt they'd fake it, especially as the prize pool is dwarfed by how much the Monopoly promotion brings them each year. Oh, and there are chance tickets too, so no.

  • If there is X number of prizes to be won in that colour, then the last piece they will only print three…

New york avenue will only have three pieces australia wide if there are three prizes in that set to win

the others have a normal chance of getting it, lets say their are 5 million tickets, 50 prizes and 1 million meals

they will print 5m+1m+50 = 6,000,050 tickets printed

  • The third and final piece is known as the control piece. Which property it is changes from year to year, and yes it's incredibly rare. But it does exist - Macca's spends thousands in security protocols on it.

You can read about it in the judgment of the case where people mixed up tickets and/or tried to scam prizes they didn't actually win by using previous year tokens. Was a nice tangent from one of the posters who had a paranoid rant about it earlier.

  • There is no chance McDonalds would or could pull something like that off without notice.

I believe all prizes are given out regardless of if the tickets are claimed in the end, that is what you get the 2nd chance entries for.

    • There is no chance

      Er yes there is …

The competitions are registered and audited. A company the size of McDonalds has far far too much to lose from not following the rules they've set down. They could be sued (and would be the target of class action lawsuits) and their reputation impact would be huge. I would agree with 'No' that there is no chance that they would not give out the prizes. Maybe some small Twitch streamer running a comp might diddle people on the prizes, but not a company the size of McDonalds.

  • There is no point them 'scamming' it when all prizes are given out as part of the second chance draw anyway.

  • It's not in maccas interest not to give out prizes anyway. Most of them would be supplied or sponsored by the the brand or product itself. So no out lay. I'd say even advertising costs are leveraged against suppliers of the prizes.

Worked at Land Rover dealer in Melboure back in early 2000’s when the major prize was a Land Rover Freelander. There were 3 of them won and we were the designated deliver dealer.

Not one person took the car. We trotted the same car out three times and no one took it. They all just took a cash deal instead. They were offered an amount that was basically the bottom end of a trade in price. (About 3/4 the retail value at the time)

    • From your post in the other Jag/LR thread, sounds like they got a better deal with cash :p

I wouldn’t have taken one of them. They certainly got the best deal, as 3 years later, the cars were worth nothing and they would have lost more than the difference in price between retail and what they were paid.
