Best Place to Find Value of Retro Games

I have a decent collection of nes, snes, n64 and Megadrive games. I want to start moving them on as they take up a fair bit of cupboard space.

Is there a place I can get a fair appraisal on the games value? Generally i'd use ebay but having been burned by paypal in the past I just wont use it again. I tried using some of those websites that list games values but there seems to be a massive disconnect between their listed prices and some of the recent sold prices on ebay.

95% of the games are complete in box with maps/books etc

Check value on Ebay using sold listings. Also check Facebook retro gaming groups

    • This is the easiest way, and the way I have done it for years. The sold prices will tell you EXACTLY what people are willing to pay - aka the market value.

Facebook retro game groups are the best place (VGA Gaming Valuations & News is one I am in). eBay isn't a great place for values, because a) there are occasional idiots that will buy something for way over the value that might skew what you think it is worth (especially if the turnover of them is rare), or b) something might go for under the value because the seller put it as auction and there weren't many people, or c) sometimes people deliberately sell to themselves (on other accounts) to make the price look inflated before selling their actual copy, and d) eBay listings have to be inflated to self-insure for fraud & for all the fees.

    • I'd like to check out that facebook page but I really dont want to create a facebook account

You're missing out on buyers from all over the country then

        • I recreated a facebook account, i had not had one in years. I cannot seem to get access to that facebook games group. It has been pending fora long time. Is it to do with the age on my facebook account?

@PlagueistheCheap: It might be, if you tell me just the first name of the account I'll tell the owner you're ok (he might automatically deny entry to people with new accounts to avoid fraud)

If you cannot see previous prices that people actually paid on Facebook why would you be interested in a bunch of people making guestimations without losing money rather than seeing what people actually paid on eBay?

Because these guys buy and sell regularly on ebay, Facebook and gumtree. They know what stuff sells for. Most of them are video game collectors, or they buy from garage sales or online when they see something selling for less than it is worth, to resell (I used to do that when I had more time).

Knowing what one person paid at one time isn't indicative of anything, especially when they could be non-paying buyers or fake/fraud listings (just because it is marked sold doesn't mean any money or goods changed hands).

What mediums would you be comfortable with selling on? The only other one worth suggesting is gumtree

I have a big nes collection and might be interested in those

If you are reluctant to sell on both eBay and Facebook, your options are very limited, and you will have to take what you can get.
I understand your desire to avoid those cesspits, but they are where the market is.
Do you have a friend who could sell on there as a favour, perhaps?
I think all other avenues will result in something like half the prices you would get.

I suppose you could list on gumtree, fixed price, if you were prepared to deal with plenty of time wasters, and possibly take much longer to sell.

    • I can make a facebook account, I was under the impression it was just for valuation rather than selling. I would sell on ebay, pick up only but that is only because ive been scammed and let down by paypal in the past.

The group I mentioned is just for valuation, there's others for selling

Burned by PayPal once, or a few times?
I’ve had no problem selling my old games on eBay, you get much better money for them.
