Google Pixel 2 XL 64GB (Just Black) - $799 @ JB Hi-Fi

1030

I think it's a decent price for Aus stock. I was gonna grab a pixel 3 but at $400 difference, I might make do with this.

There is rumour of Pixel 3 Lite. Maybe wait for that?

    • Indeed, and rumour is that both will be released imminently:

      https://www.thestar.com.my/tech/tech-news/2018/12/10/google-…

    • -5

there was a rumour when i was a teen about waiting and loosing virginity with a hotter babe ….import t thing with
homes is software and what. erik s of android you get …..pixel had pie and will get next release.

      • +1

        Huh?

      • damn pre emptive typing …..

how long do people really want to wait for a new model ….the big deal about pixel is the software …. so if you get pie and the next android release you are ahead of many other phones already.

even with cameras the big deal is the software ….

treble compliance on android is already allowing google to write software to the abstraction layer and work across multiple brands of phone hardware.

new model might have slightly better processor or battery but nothing life changing, just incremental.

        • I thought you were gonna elaborate on rumours during your teens..

    10% off Optus Plans + $400 (Pixel 3, XL, Galaxy S9, S9+) or $200 EFTPOS Card @ Harvey Norman/Domayne/Joyce Mayne (New/Port)

    https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/423146

Go for this deal. Cheaper than buying pixel 2 xl outright

    • Yep, almost as good as the old Telstra Pixel deals.

    • I won't be in Aus for at least half a year and I hate plans

      • Then signup to Google one and get 20% off google store and get the pixel 3?

        • Oh I didn't realize this was still available. How do I do this? I think I'm already registered, when I went on the website it gave an option to upgrade. I'm assuming I need to join the yearly membership. Is the $24.99 one sufficient and am I guaranteed the code?

          • +1

@[Deactivated]: I got monthly for $2.50, I just downloaded the Google One app and it appeared in the app. No idea about guaranteed. Worth trying for $2.50 though. The P3 is a fair bit better than P2Xl except in battery.

            • @onlinepred: I just signed up the monthly after your comment, have not seen the code yet, will it take a while to come in or is it instantaneous? Needing to buy a new phone urgently.

              • @a12: Hey mate, it appeared instantly for me. Sorry you are on your own. Worth contacting Google.

                • @onlinepred: No worries mate, like you said, worth trying anyways. Anyone got a code they are not using and happy to share please let me know, thanks!

                  • @a12: Contacted Google, apparently it's a promotion for people who signed up prior to 3 Dec, unable to generate due to the "promotion".

      • Learn to love them, they will save you money. Unless you are the type that leaves roaming overseas on.

        • Plans save you money?

          • @onlinepred: The deal I linked does! Don't forget the foregone interest.

            • +1

@LZCS: Plans don't save you money, deals saves you money. Plans can cost you a lot of money. So I'll accept that highly discounted plans can save you money.

  • +1

    jack?

    • Dongle required. It comes with the phone.

      • +1

hmm. time to buy a QC3 then.

        • +3

Go the Sony XM3, they're better. (unless you prefer Bose sound signature)

    • jill?

    • -1

This isn't eBay, JB don't jack

  • +2

    I'll take a Oneplus 6T + GCAM thanks.

    • Kogan has them for $899, do you know if you can get TRS from Kogan?

    • Will take Pixel 2 XL > Oneplus 6T anyday

      • Why? considering most reviews of the oneplus 6t are against the pixel 3 as thats what its benchmarked at. Pixel may have better software smarts for photos but i cant see any other reason. Pixel hang their hat on the software used for photos. If its software based then it means others can tweak their photo software as well..

        • Key word is tweaking, which you don't need to do too much on the 2XL. Maybe I'm getting old, when I want to take a photo I want a single button press 😁

          • @customundo: You definitely took your key word there the wrong way. The tweaking means if googles software makes the pictures so good then other manufactureres can do the same eventually and roll out the same picture smarts and those phones will end up better as their cameras are better as google has left the cameras and focused on the software. You do the exact same with most phoes these days, point and shoot or 'single button press'

            • @worthy1: other companies could tweak the software but when or , they might loose interest. treble compliant phones allows compatibility of software between phones , but they would need to be on oreo android one and have decided to be compliant ( was optional ) or to be on pie android one and they had no option.

it’s all about the software ….

          • @customundo: When I want to take a photo I reach for my camera.

      • -3

        lol wut?

6t has better screen, better software, dash charge, better battery life, more ram, more internal storage, onscreen fingerprint reader, face unlock

But pixel 2 has….. no advantage at all?

        • Define better screen, 2XL runs pure android so clear winner in software, battery life are similar, I'll take 2XL fingerprint scanner positioning anyday, face unlock is not something I care for

So yes your argument is laughable at best. Please carry on

        • -1

          6t has better software??

Haha that's a great joke. OnePlus have come a long way but not that far.

Pixel 1 is still being supported. Can't really say that for the OnePlus 2 or OnePlus X that are the same age.

Dash charge and face unlock? Tell me more about the gimmicks no-one ever uses.

Battery life? Pixel 2 XL easily lasts me a day - could do me 2 if I needed. Any difference is negligible past that point.

Pixel 2 (XL) has… no advantage at all?

          Hmmm.. ok keep thinking that.
Better camera, better UI, better support, can actually find accessories for it, more conveniently placed fingerprint sensor, shortcuts that actually make sense, first to get new Android versions (and more of them).

          Yeah no advantage at all.

          • +2

@pennypincher98: lots of youtubers have actually said Oxygen OS is better than stock android.

            • +2

              @[Deactivated]: YouTubers? Lol.

If Oxygen is so much better, why don't we see more OnePlus phones? I don't think I've ever seen someone with one since they've launched in Australia.

              • +3

@pennypincher98: Not weighing in on this argument, but OnePlus technically haven't actually launched in Australia. They had some weird limited soft launch of the 5, but in particular all 6 or 6t units in this country are grey imports.

              • @pennypincher98: Yes, you know the people that try all kinds of phones rather then fanboys that love one phone. It is pretty easy to find how good the 6T is rated. infact just youtube or google 6T vs Pixel 2. Vs Pixel 3 will be better though as that what people are benchmarking it against.

And yes people tend to favour the Oxygen OS.

People seem to be getting a bit upset and precious over their Google Pixels here. I wasnt even aware of the 6T and where it sits until earlier this week and i was surprised. I was almost sold on the Pixel 3 but would i pay that much more….

The 6T is being touted as the flagship phone of the year, dont be surprised if you read about that later, i cant see pixel 2 being mentioned anywhere. Pixel 3 maybe but even the P20 Pro seems to be favoured over it.

              • +1

@pennypincher98: The OnePlus fan boys will always hype up OnePlus - think they are still waiting for the flagship killer or whatever tag to become reality. It's been in the making since 2014.

Oxygen is good but it's not pure android. Pretty straightforward

                • @customundo: Exactly. I agree with what you've said.

The OnePlus was a massive lot of phone for the price paid so the design, lack of updates etc was forgivable.

Now they have increased the price of their phones going from "budget, killer" to "budget killer" and have put an weird config. Sure the phone won't hiccup with speed - there's much overkill in that department but not in the screen which is a lower res than the Pixel 2 and 3XL.
They like to churn out a heap of phones as well, so the upgrade time from flagship to flagship is smaller (eg OnePlus 6/6T or OnePlus 2/X)

Just so we are clear, I am on a Telstra plan $49/mth for the Pixel 2XL. $1176 seems very feasible to me, given the inclusions. It's hard to justify spending that much on a phone by itself though.

                  • @pennypincher98: I'm pretty sure they've guaranteed the same amount of updates as the pixel. If the OP6T was officially available in Aus at a competitive price then it'd be a no brainer for me. Last year MKBHD said he uses OP over Pixel

                    • @[Deactivated]: As far as I know, Pixels are the only ones offering 3 years updates. Most offer 2. Some cheaper phones never get updates.

If someone else offers 3 years updates that would hopefully start a very welcome shift.

                      Competitive price

Well that's subjective. Take me back to the days where OnePlus was only just starting out and wanting to make a name for themselves - those were the best deals.

                • @customundo: android one is the way to go …..it’s interesting how some companies have the same hardware but issue one version with the companies version of android and another as android one version , xiaomi did it with the a1 and moto did it with one of their models.

im on nokia and love android one ….you get the pure android experience and can add what extra software or skins you want …..

Any Deals on Iphones Especially 8 Plus and 7 Plus 64, or 128 GB

  • -3

Why buy this and not Pixel 3, except for the $ ?

    • +2

clearly its the $. Value for money.

      • So the new features that are present in Pixel 3 is not worth the extra money?

        • clearly not or people would not buy previous models of phones. There is often nothing wrong with a previous model, remember they were the bee's knees when they came out so they did have something to offer. And if you are on a budget then….

So unfortunately $ is always going to be the answer when people buy a previous version.

        • +7

Well the features that I could tell are:

Wide selfie camera (I don't take selfies)
Top shot and night shot (Both available on the Pixel 2 XL)
Call screening (Not available in Aus)
Snapdragon 845 (I doubt anyone would be able to tell the difference in every day use, 845 is already outdated anyways)

So unless someone can tell me something I miss that's worth $400, then I personally don't think so.

          • @[Deactivated]: Comparing to the pixel 3 xl at $1349, that's a saving of $550..

          • @[Deactivated]: An additional year of software updates since the Pixel 2 XL is now over one year old. That would be the major downside of the Pixel 2 XL for me.

            • @cnitsuj: that's true, but I feel the saving would go into just buying a new phone. Besides, I feel that OS have come such a long way that any updates are mostly negligible. If software updates are that important, then wouldn't the iphone be the best choice?

              • @[Deactivated]: I prefer Android and the reason I would get a Pixel is for the software updates. I have a Nexus 6P and liked the software updates and I'm looking at the Pixel 2 XL or Pixel 3/Pixel 3 XL. I'm travelling overseas shortly so probably would get Pixel 2 XL due to this deal now.

                • @cnitsuj: we're in the exact same boat haha

                  • @[Deactivated]: Have you decided to buy the pixel 2 XL?
How's your Nexus 6P holding up?
My battery is bad, have to constantly charge it. I thought about replacing the battery as everything else is fine.

                    • @cnitsuj: I haven't bought it yet. I replaced my battery about a month ago after having to have it plugged into a power bank every time I use it but now it works fine. Lasts me all day. However I will warn you that I got bootlooping right after I got the battery replaced. Led to me having to blow dry it to get it to turn on then root it to disable 4 cores. Surprisingly still works great.

            • @cnitsuj: If software support is the defining factor for you, Apple have a great track record of supporting iPhones down the track. Of course, this probably won't apply to you if there are other reasons you enjoy Android.

  • Great deal I bought 2 pixel xl's overseas about a month ago for $639 and love it. It's my first phone other than an iphone and I'm hooked. My last iphone battery didn't even last a year and apple refused to give me a new one. They offered a discount but that was it. Apple's prices are also to high. I always like to to buy the previous model as it's a great saving. I would strongly recommend this phone.

  • This or p20 pro?

    • I was just about to ask this question. I'm interested in the comparison of the Camera only though

  • Seems like a lot for a previous gen 64GB model.

On the flip side, the Pixel 3 doesn't seem to offer much to incentivise the additional $400 cost.
For anyone looking at a Pixel 3, I think this deal is worth considering.

  • +1

    Still too expensive.

  • Hmmm. This or the LG G7, main criteria is camera performance.

    • +1

      Pixel camera way better

    • +2

      Easy. Pixel.

  • +1

It seems like a good deal, but it's really just brought it down a price it should've been initially. Google over prices their hardware way too much

  • Awesome phone.

  • +1

Why can't they release them at this price. Pixel 3 XL should be this price and even that is expensive.

  • -6

    That's an expensive fake iPhone

    • It's not a Galaxy phone deal!

  • Guys this or Samsung S9?? Samsung S9 has $200 eftpos offer and I can use HN Amex offer.

    • This, just had a friend who went from Samsung galaxy s9 to pixel 3 XL and loves it, pixel 2 XL will give a similar experience

  • Qualcomm 855 is about to be released, might give the 835 a miss

  • +1

    www.jbhifi.com.au

Black and White model as well.

    • where?

      • I meant the offer applies to Panda as well. I just bought one from Castle Hill.

        • Cool, thanks for letting me know. I'll probably get that one instead

  • Thanks OP, purchased!

    • Did yours come with home mini and headphones?

      • Mine did. Shrink wrapped together.

        • yeah was not expecting that haha

  • $400 buys you the notch. You'll always think back and be like if only i paid an extra $400…I could have had the notch!

    • +1

oh god the pixel 3 xl is a no, it looks horrendous to me.
