Bluetooth Headphones w/Boom Mic Recommendations?

I make a lot of phone calls throughout the day for work with my personal mobile phone. It's one of these new age phones without a headphone jack which is getting a tad annoying because I can't charge the phone during my work day.

As a result, I've been looking for a pair of Bluetooth headphones which have a boom mic (a microphone that pops down in front of/near your mouth) built in for the best call quality, as there's usually a bit of background noise which I'd like to minimise.

I'd like them to be over-the-ear stereo type, so I'm not interested in those headsets that only have one speaker or fit into one ear.

Can anyone recommend a pair? It seems very hard to find one with these requirements.

Gaming headsets (which, in terms of form factor, are perfect for what I need) aren't made in Bluetooth versions, at least with respectable brands, because of lag issues (even if they are wireless, they use 2.4GHz only), and highly recommended headphones like the Bose QuietComfort 35s and Sony WH-1000XM2/3 don't have boom mics.

  • You're definitely right about the difficulty finding one to fit those requirements. It seems as though the only ones close have only one speaker which is what you have stated that you don't want.

After some further digging perhaps something like the Plantronics Voyager Focus may be exactly what you are after. The reviews across a few websites seem substantial too.

    Good luck.

  • I have the Jabra Evolve 65 (Stereo) which I quite like (they even glow red when you're on a call so people don't bother you). https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Jabra-EVOLVE-65-MS-Stereo-Stereo… As an added bonus they support dual connections, so I can connect my PC and phone at the same time. They're on ear but pretty comfortable for extended meetings / calls though I don't wear them ALL day.

Not sure what the difference is between them and the 75 is as those weren't out when I bought (https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Jabra-Evolve-75-MS-Stereo-Wirele…).

The other thing I've done when I'm tethered to a desk is to use a desktop mic with my favourite wireless headphones, which is useful for meetings where you're listening more often than talking.

The pricing on these isn't great as they go after the top end of the business market, but worth it IMO, I found them on a 20% off ebay sale. (I'll leave you to find the best price wherever as I wasn't looking).

Steelseries Arctis 3 Bluetooth should fit the bill. JB have them here, although you should be able to get them a bit cheaper than that.

There is also a 2019 version of them out.

Perhaps the new HyperX Cloud Mix will be suitable - not sure if it's available in Australia yet. It doesn't have NC but it should be provide ample isolation in an office environment.

FWIW, I use the TaoTronics TT-BH22 for work and they've been good. It doesn't have a boom mic but I use it for calls and it's fine.

I prefer over ear headphones rather than on ear.

  • Are you able to use a wireless charger to charge your phone?

  • I've been using a Logitech H800 for the last 6 years. It's comfortable, over the ear style, has a boom mic and works across bluetooth as well as with a tiny USB dongle. I've synced it via bluetooth with my macbook and use the dongle in my windows PC. I can then select which source it connects to by the position of the 3-way on/off switch on the headset.

It's been used so much I just replaced the earpads and built-in battery.

    $128 from Officeworks

    • That seems to be on ear, not over the ear.

  • Steelseries 840(I have the older H model which only has a wired parallel option for a headset/mic connection to a mobile etc) has Bluetooth and does all that you ask, though I don't know if you can still find them for sale. They do have models with Bluetooth + Wireless in the Arctis range as well. The pull out mic design is really excellent and no one seems to have any longevity issues.

  • Just an update for those who've stumbled upon this thread, I ended up getting the Steelseries Arctis 3 Bluetooth headset. It fit the bill perfectly. Thanks to those who made recommendations!
