As someone who had been to the Maldives I can assure you Male is very different from the islands. Male is where the locals live. There is a lot of poverty, run down building and general dirtiness…. but the islands are the complete opposite. Unless the protests and unrest are happening at the airport you will be sheltered from what’s going on.
I guess not all people can be great at fact checking and making informed judgements… to summarise for those interested:
- the state of emergency was back in Feb/March 2018
- this instability has occurred before, but never affects the resort islands or the airport which is separated from Male
- all the problems are confined to Male and surrounds
- Tripadvisor forums are a good source of up to date intel
- as per gov't travel recommendations: avoid protests in Male
- if you're staying in Male, you're doing Maldives wrong
Well said, I was there in early April and loved it. My best holiday ever and I'd go back in a heart beat.
Worked in Male around this time and still very safe to walk around at all hours, more so than most Australian cities. Getting run over by scooters is the only thing to be afraid of!
As you say wouldn't be holidaying there and islands are far removed, but warning can pretty much be ignored.
Thanks. I had won a Maldives trip few years ago but the promoter did not honor it as change of ownership,? It was a competition run by a bar.
