[Suggestion needed] AmEx Travel Insurance

Hi All,

We (2 adults and 2 kids) are planning to go on holiday in December to Singapore. I bought the plane tickets using my Amex Velocity Platinum Card, and there is supplementary travel insurance with the card.

We don't need any fancy insurance cover, just cover for emergency only.

Do you suggest to buy separate insurance or it is okay to use the Amex supplementary insurance?

Please advise, if you guys have any experience with the insurance cover.

Thanks Heaps.

  • You may need to read the Amex insurance T&C because it may not cover everything and everyone in your party.

Why don't you have a read and find out for us?

    • Thanks, Smuggler. I was asking, and curious any of you have any experience with AmEx travel insurance.

  • Yep, nobody can decide whether the credit card insurance is good enough for your needs except for yourself.
I suggest you thoroughly read the PDS and make your own decision.

This will be a bit late for you but for the benefit of others reading this, the travel insurance associated with your Amex platinum card covers the primary card holder only, regardless of whether all the tickets were purchased together. Even if you pay for supplementary cards, those card holders are still not covered.

The insurance is good for a single person travelling alone only, so likely a pretty poor card holder benefit for most people. It looks good on paper for promoting the card though

    • It should be clarified that according to the PDF above, spouse and children are also considered to be Primary Card Member:

      Primary Card Member means:
      1. the person who applied for the American Express Velocity Platinum
Card Account and who is issued an American Express Velocity
Platinum Card Account as the primary account holder; and
      2. their husband, wife, fiance(e), de-facto or life partner with whom
they have continuously cohabited for a period of six (6) months
      or more; and
      3. their legally dependent children (including stepchildren or legally
adopted children) who are twenty-two (22) years of age or less and
wholly dependent on them for financial support.
