Long shot, but not possible to 5W-40 for the same price is it?

    • Coming into summer, its still a 40 weight when up to temperature.

Having a 15w rating isnt going to hurt in summer.

  • Can it use for 2001 Mercedes-Benz ML320 3.2mpi 3.2i W163, 2210Kgs 160Kw 5 speed Semi-Auto Unleaded Petrol, 6 Cylinder?

    • Check oil specifications in your owners handbook. It may be in your glovebox.
      Compare the specs.

    • Honestly I'd be using thinner, fully synthetic oil for your Mercedes. I know this is OzBargain but you really want to spend more than $9.99 on that car.

Disregarding my opinion, I don't think (but not certain) this oil would be suited anyway. At a guess you'd probably need 5W-40 or thereabouts.

      • Agree for the synthetic.

        However you're comparing a 40 weight to a 40weight.

While its thicker than a 5w cold, 15w (cold rating) is still thinner than 40 weight (hot rating).

But yes, likely not the right ratings for someone who cares about specs, or needs warranty.

        • Ha, right you are. Why do I keep coming onto OzBargain when I'm so tired?

I'm not sure what I was thinking when I wrote that but 5w-30 is probably about what it likes. Unless it's a real shitter of a Merc I'd be buying decent fully synthetic for it.

          • @Click_It: Do you follow the oil 'scene'?

Did you know Mobil won a court case against API ages back allowing it to call GroupIII oils "Full synthetic" because you can't pull it from the ground? (you have to hydrocrack it).
That's why 'Full Synthetic' is so cheap now; it's what we used to call Semi Synthetic in the 90's,

The OLD definition of full synthetic is now specifically labeled PAO, ESTER, or AN; and in this country the only two I know of are the Penrite 10Tenths range, and the new Nulon Racing (metal tins).

There are a couple of other premium brands out there (RoyalPurple, Amsoil, Redline) but finding them can be a chore.

I just find it funny that when someone says "I only run synthetic" then list, say, Mobil1, they they don't know they're running a GroupIII oil.

  • Would Mobil Super 1000 Engine Oil 15W-40, be suitable for my Briggs & Stratton 4.5hp 4 stroke lawn mower?
Briggs & Stratton suggest "Engines on most outdoor power equipment operate well with 5W30 Synthetic oil. For equipment operated in hot temperatures, Vanguard 15W50 Synthetic oil provides the best protection."

Wow. A lawnmower suggesting a multigrade. Thats new!

Mowers used to run a single sae oil (say, sae40), because they run at near max rpm and get hot. As such there is no modifying of the base oil and it will last extremely long (most mowers dont have a 'change' interval, they just consume a little and you refill).

This is a mineral oil, not synthetic.
No harm really, but since your mower ASKS for synthetic, and mowers run hot, whatever oil change interval the manual says; halve it.

I actually thought I could OzBargain my Honda mower years back. Bad idea, car engine oils have additives (detergents) which made my mower a slush bucket. It has 3 gears to propel it and those kept slipping kinda like when your car clutch is just about shot.

I changed back to the recommended Honda oil and problem went like that.

If it's not a self-propelled mower then it probably can't hurt, if so I'd stick with the mower variety B&S recommend.

At the end of the day a 1L mower oil should last years anyway. I change both my mower and line cutter annually, they don't take much. You can usually get a 4L version too though of course it'll be more expensive than car oil.

Also, great tip above about halving the frequency of oil changes with mineral oil. It breaks down faster than synthetic.
