When's The Last Time You Purchased Something 'full Price'?

Hey guys,

Groceries, already cheap items found in Kmart, dollar stores etc is excluded from the list. More like things you wouldn't normally get a discount for, like a Samsung TV or a Sony Playstation or even a good pair of Levi jeans.

Ever since I joined oz bargain, my shopping experienced changed and my mentality as well. I never buy things retail/full price unless I have to.

Whenever I shop for tech, shoes, clothes, furniture, phones, phone plans, games, toys whatever it is, I always look for a deal on it. If there isn't a deal then I am not going to buy it unless I really need it for like a birthday present, wedding etc.

Thinking of the last thing I purchased at retail price was the PS4 Spiderman game which I wanted so badly on day 1 at JB HI FI for I think $79.

What's the last thing you purchased at full price? Or you're like me?

  • Does Kmart count? It’s probably the only place I buy full price at, but I shop there frequently.

    • Forgot about the cheap stores like Kmart, dollar stores etc. Nah those don't count cause it's so easy to just purchase them at full price. What about your non-Kmart items? Like shoes or a fridge?

      • Oh excluding Kmart I generally don’t buy things… ever.

  • I don't understand the question.

    • Pretty much, if you're shopping online or in-store, do you bargain hunt or do you pay retail price for that item? For example, your TV broke and you're shopping for a new TV. You shop online and saw a TV you loved and it fits your requirements but it's not on sale and there are no discount codes for it, retail price is $2999. Do you buy it? Or do you shop for another model that has a discount code even though it may be more or less expensive than your perfect TV @ $2999?

So instead of buying the TV I want, I buy a TV that I don't want and pay more for it?

        No, I'm not like you.

        • Yup cause hypothetically, the TV that fitted your requirements may be the Samsung Series 8 TV @ $2999 but the more expensive TV, series 9 is $2000 off in-which the discount code is only applied to the series 9 family not 8 but cost $3999 after discount, because….. consumerism.

Another question might be: 'Why do I spend my money on something I normally wouldn't buy just because it made the front page of OzBargain?' FOMO?

I'm not saying it's the case with OP but I'm almost certain that if there was a detailed analysis carried out on users spending and purchasing patterns, the majority would actually spend more money because of OzBargain, not save money.

  • Bought a Elite controller, two actually at launch for RRP. That was years ago, apart from that I actually cannot recall.

Nice idea! This is an interesting post. I think everyone here has experienced the same change of mentality as you, it's just become part of our nature to stay away from RRP and just keep a list of items in our mind and jump when a deal hits.

Also if you notice the expensive stuff deals are mostly tech, mobile or gaming. And of course gift cards, which are then used to buy tech LOL. The vocal crowd here is actually a bunch of nerds, or at least a high percentage of them are.

And occasional clothing store discounts, which I believe as you mentioned are too low key to mention.

Would be very interesting to see a stats page of the type of deals in terms of genre that were the most popular in the last 5 years or so.

hmmm…last time I paid full price for something (excluding groceries) without shopping around.

I'm trying hard to think of a time. I honestly can't remember.

    Fool price*

  • Have had moments where I was in a desperate situation so bought the item full price then fully regretted it later.

Kind of ashamed to share the information here since this is ozbargain after all and the code must be kept for the good of the brother/sisterhood.

I bought full priced earphones at a station twice because I was desperate for music and full price headphones once same reason and was running late for a train sue me

  • unless its something I really need right then , I would at least do a quick search on ozbargain or those price comparison sites. Even TVs you could probably haggle a bit down with the salesperson

I typically pay the full asking price for escorts, you'll regret bargaining

  • Uni fees…no discount there :-(

    • Uni fees are definite a non-bargain. Whack it on Hecs and you pay 120%.

Mobile phone screen protectors. As soon as I buy a new phone, I rush to buy. Just can't handle scratches on my phone

  • Honestly dont remember chance are it was a video game that came out i was keen on maybe FFXV or FIFA but i rarely pay full RRP for anything history tells if you wait a few weeks most things drop in value pretty quick these days.

  • But if you use a rewards card is it really full price? Makes paying for rego just a little bit good.

Discounts are just a gimmick to make you buy things and make you feel like you're getting a "deal". Usually everything I buy is full price but I don't buy anything in the first place.

      Well said.

Same can be said for cashback sites. They really are a gimmick, they just make people spend more with a less guilty conscience. Then you finally get a small cashback reward after 3 months. Wow.

  • Every time I go to Bunnings :/
