Earn up to 15,000 Qantas FF Points by Loading Foreign Currency on Travel Card (Potentially More)

43

If you're going overseas (or maybe even if you're not?) you could earn quite a few points, relatively easily.

Earn guaranteed bonus points – that’s 5,000 or 15,000 bonus Qantas Points - simply for loading foreign currency by 20 December 2018. The more you load, the more points you earn.
Load amount
(in equivalent foreign currency) Bonus points earned
AU$2,000 to $4,999 5,000 Qantas Points
AU$5,000 or more 15,000 Qantas Points

If you do so, then you also stand a chance of winning a share of a million points. But that's obviously not guaranteed.

    What card is eligible?

    • Qantas Cash. They're simply promoting their travel card by running this.

  • have a read of this site and see if this is for you

wouldnt you be better off using citi bank plus account your losing 3-4 cents in the conversion with qantas

    • -5

Each to their own, some people want the points - especially if you're using it for say, a business class ticket. That small amt you lose in conversion can be gained in the ticket you buy.

      • +5

It is not a small amount, mark up ~5% for $5000 that is $250. Paying 5% for points is the most stupid way to earn points.

        • How do you figure out ~5%?

          • @cheapo999: How hard can it be with their published rate and xe.com? In fact it can be even more than 5%, all these BS travel card are all ~5+ %.

            • +2

@samehada: Just to prove your point I went in to both sites and checked the rates.
              Say USD: (72.3230 - 69.04)/72.3230
              Thats 4.5%.

However where can I exchange money using xe rates?

      • You can buy points from other members cheaper than this is costing you - using the Qantas travel card purely for the points is a costing you money.

        • -4

you could, but it's against their T&Cs…

      • live exchange A$5000 gives you US$3617 call it $3600, Qantas exchange gives you $3451 + 15000 points, $150 difference works out your buying points for 1c each, dollar goes down your ahead dollar goes up you behind

        • +4

Your calculation is wrong, you have missed the point, the difference is $166 USD, which is $230AUD. These travel cards are all scam.

          • @samehada: oops your right, brain fade..

live exchange A$5000 gives you US$3617 call it $3600, Qantas exchange gives you US$3451 + 15000 points, US$150 difference works out your paying $230 for 15000 points which can usually be bought for $150

            • @RogueWolf: it's fairly simple, there is NO travel card - similar to this - that works out better than Citibank plus or 28 Degrees and select others. fees, exchange rate differences, conversion fees are 3-5% plus

              • @Coops1: agree Coops1 see my comment above "wouldn't you be better off using citi bank plus account" … my other comments are just working out the calculation, I always use citi when travelling great card

    • But it's not cash…

      • can take cash out at ATM no fees if your reffering to citi card

        • No was referring to 28 degrees.
          Cash advance fee
3% of the cash advance or $4 (whichever is greater).
Plus 21% interest charged from moment advance is made (unless you preload).

This sounds like a bad deal - you can get many more points for a similar cost when signing up for a new credit card

    • Except this is about a load and go card not a credit card. No impact to credit score or credit application.

      • Of course - if you have a poor credit history I definitely wouldn't be going down the path of credit card applications for Qantas points. If you do have a good credit history however and want to maximise the Qantas points you earn than credit cards can be much more rewarding than this deal for a similar cost.

        • +1

I get what you're saying but they're quite different products/uses.

And no Qantas point earning credit card would be good for USD payments. So you'd need another solution anyway.

          • @mxlmxlmxl: Of course - Ozbargain lesson 1 in overseas travel is to get a 28 Degrees credit/Citibank debit/etc etc account for paying amounts not denominated in AUD!

  • Load amount
(in equivalent foreign currency) Bonus points earned
    AU$2,000 to $4,999 5,000 Qantas Points

wow… a whopping 5000 points…. You'd be better spending your $$ at Woolies and get their Rewards Cards deals than wasting any effort on QF Cash Cards.

No offence but many of you have this a little skewed and not 100% right.

Based on ACTUALS if done today if doing $5000

    28 Degrees rate = 0.7271 = USD$3,635

    Qantas Cash = 0.6914 = USD$3,417

That means you get USD$172 more.

    At the .7271 rate that's AUD$236

You get 15,000 bonus points plus 1.5 per dollar spent. So you'd end up with 22,500 points.

Most value points at 1c. So thats $225

Points can be sold on Gumtree/eBay between 1.2-1.4c though. So sold could be worth $280-300ish.

Realistically there's very little in it between the two for everyone to be so agressive in it saying it's poor value. It's at worse, $11 difference and some prefer that to the hassle or risk of buying/earning points and use points a lot.

Basically, everyone's circumstances dictate what is best for them. Comments above are opinions, not facts and bias.

Also add in that this is a load and go card and does not impact credit score, is not a line of credit, it can also be safer/more convenient for some too.

    • Exactly this
Their exchange rates (as indicated here) are so poor compared to the market rate - it will cost you significantly more than just using your ING / Citibank card.

      • Did you not read the post? Its the same if you use points. If you don't use or care for points 100% agree it's better to use a 28 Degrees etc.

    • Or get an ANZ travel rewards card if you want points from a credit card >> comparison to your 28 degrees suggestion.

$220 per year annual fee - offset by free domestic return flight and two lounge passes.
      PLUS you accrue points.

I think your calculations is wrong, correct me if Im wrong.

28 Degrees you said was USD $3,635
and if Qantas Cash is USD $3,417

shouldn't the difference be USD $218
and not USD $172 therefore making a bigger difference from $225 to $301 ???

  • Hold on isn't this a cash card with no % fees for cash withdrawal? Can't compare it to 28 deg credit cards if you need to make a cash withdrawal OS. Last I looked there's a 3% atm withdrawal charge. Qantas cash is US$2.
