eBay Australia to Pause All Cashback Rewards from 9 Dec

Logged into CashRewards to click through to eBay and was met with the following message:

Important Notice - eBay Australia
Commencing 9 Dec 2018, eBay Australia will pause all activity with Australian Cashback partners.

What does this mean to our valued members? There will be no Cashback on any eBay Australia purchases from 9 Dec 2018 until further notice.

We acknowledge that whilst eBay's decision is untimely and unfortunate, we remain hopeful that it's only temporary.

We'd like to thank you for your ongoing support and apologise for any inconvenience this change by eBay Australia may cause.

What a shame!

It's probably a logistical nightmare. With all the free listing and final value fees and discounts happening on eBay I'm not surprised they are clawing back their margin by killing off cashback.

For quite a few years now, they've also made the mistake of paying out more than what was intended. This was only very recently patched out.

if you go back and look at your history you'll notice the cashback is paid on the full amount of the item prior to using any discount codes.

if you go back and look at your history you'll notice the cashback is paid on the full amount of the item prior to using any discount codes.

But this was correctly. I the buyer did pay the full amount price.

If you go look at your ebay receipts etc, you paid the full amount to ebay. Payment was a two part payment, made up of a credit from ebay/paypal and you with the rest.

Funny Story - I use ebay as a source of inventory for some of my products so i make use of the cashback system. I was living in Thailand briefly for a large portion of last year and Shopback Thailand had 2% rebate on eBay. At first I thought it wouldn't work for .au, and to my surprise it did PLUS the conversion rate for THB to AUD was better than the actual exchange rate. I made around $800 AUD most likely with a 2.5% cashback rate. Also, I think you're right. I was getting the cashback reward which was the full value which didn't include any 20% coupons I may have used.

Fast forward maybe 4 months of doing this, I noticed that they changed it from 2% to 0.5%. I have a feeling i was one of maybe a handful of people actually using shopback Thailand for eBay rebates (eBay is not popular in SEA) and either shopback or eBay realised that they were losing profit.

Right now it seems 0.5% is still available in shopback.co.th. So if you have a thai bank account/phone number handy, you can still get some form of rebates. Unless they banned com.au somehow.

Yeah eBay seem been gradually scaling back the kick-backs paid to referrers. I'm not surprised. These schemes are probably costing a fair bit of revenue, and how much benefit do they provide?

      • +3

i can tell u i have done a crapload of unnecessary shopping one bay because of that 1% rebate

  • I guess it's Qantas Mall time? Any other recommended alternatives to get a little perk/benefit?

    • Most of my attempts with qantas havent tracked at all :/

    • +2

I think this is unlikely to be true. You should be a news reporter - nothing better than click bait news stories!

      • +3

Plot twist Op is already a news reporter! !

  • +2

Well, the discount was tiny (1%), but still, I always used it for every eBay purchase. I imagine eBay thinks people will use the site regardless of the rebate, and I think this is correct.

    • They used it before the cashback started as well.

I wonder if it has anything to do with Coles or other big retailers? It seems like they've been ramping up their partnership with Flybuys.

  • +3

Does that mean they're not tracking any new cashbacks from the 9th, or that any cashback payments that haven't been received before the 9th will not be paid?

I am steadily moving to Amazon. eBay really to get their act together!

  • Anyone got a promo code to join Cash back rewards?

  • Wasn’t using it anyway, it’s just 1%, whatever take it

    • I recently bought a Samsung phone during a 25% off deal on ebay. Cash back was also increased to 2.5% which alone resulted in $50 back in my pocket. Would you prefer that money in your pocket or ebay?

      • i think salian will just buy a cheaper phone.

But I have to agree with you. Now that CR has an app, it made it so much easier to get the cashback through phone, as opposed to using laptop/desktop.

  • too close to xmas eh.

  • Glad I bought that $4100 TV last month then

This result is actually a win for the greater community.
Why are people okay with giving away their money and information to these legitimate cash back entities?
Why do people believe they save 1% when its actually not a saving at all. In fact its giving their money to a third party.
Unless of course members are in awe of cash back associates and they want to help a "mate" by clicking through.
Its an honest and transparent business decision by Ebay. I respect it.

    • Not just cashback gone. All loyalty partners too (Qantas, Flybuys, the lot).

      • Obviously eBay is still with Flybuys in an way of linking accounts. I think eBay is happy to switch to flybuys points rebate as the only cashback.

        • For now. Give it a week or two and we'll see ;)

          • @Clear: I predict flybuys points rebate rate may be increased. Flybuys is surely to be the winner with this change, non-cashback partners (eg.OzBargain) too!

    HAHAHA!!!

Good on you ebay for giving me more incentive than I already have to shop at Amazon.

6% percent standard cash-back and 10% - 20% percent during Prime and Black Friday sales.

    Yes Sir!

Wonder if CR is still paying for the eBay US site? Most of the items I can just purchase from Ebay.com and get it shipped to a AU address. Might be a workaround.

    • +1

It was the eBay AU partner network that stopped so the US ePN would still be active.

  • Wonder if this also affects Credit Card Rewards schemes? EG going through ANZ shopping mall give 3 ANZ reward points per $1 spent at Ebay in which case the 'money' is coming from ANZ albeit at lower rate than 1% from Cashrewards.

    • +1

Those are usually funded out of the merchant fees that the banks charge, so no, I highly doubt they'll stop anytime soon (as in the banks aren't going to stop charging merchant fees). They may be devalued regularly (thanks Amex… NOT!) but they'll continue into the foreseeable future.

      • +1

Any points rebate sites using "click, redirect, purchase, track, report, award" work in the same way as cashback sites. However, eBay may regard points as different to real cash so it may stay on.

  • Just received an email from flybuys saying spend $150 get 500 points valid from today until 16 Dec.

    • $60 for me

  • +1

I"m not sure why people bang on about moving over to Amazon. They have a terrible range since they stopped us shopping from the US Amazon site.

    • +2

didn't you hear that they reversed the policy a few week ago?

  • whelp I've found myself shopping more and more on amazon recently. This might just be the last nail in the coffin for me at least.

  • I believe they are intended to fix some hick ups, before saying they are about removing anything let’s wait and see, and it is only 1% its a very
small amount for them to grip about anyway, system upgrades and such.

If you take a look at eBay USA and the rest, it has not been put on hold…
100% revision on the t&Cs just my 2cents.

  • I've noticed my payouts from CR are getting pushed out a few times now. Any idea when this will be resolved? Will eBay honour existing pending payouts?

  • Merged from Casherewards Nolonger Partnered with eBay?

Noticed Cash Rewards was nolonger partnered with ebay, now offering 0% but other sites like shopback still offer the 2%. Does anyone know what happened or if its likely to be reinstated? I remember the same happened a while ago, and was put back.
