Do I Need a Modem/Router Combo or Just Router for NBN FTTC

I am getting NBN FTTC in the next day or so. Do I Need a Modem/Router Combo or Just Router for NBN FTTC? Thanks.

  • When you connect to the National Broadband Network over FTTC, you'll need an NBN Connection Device and a wireless router. NBN Co will provide the NBN Connection Device for free, while your internet service provider typically provides you with a router.

    Simple Google search. Lazy question.

I don't think it's a lazy question. I did a search and was under the impression that the statement that NBN Co provide you with the "NBN Connection Device" was actually old information. I wasn't sure if the "NBN Connection Device" was actually a vdsl modem, or that it was some other tech that I don't actually have in my house, that stays in the pit outside.

NBN will bring the modem during the setup. You supply the router.

        • So its a modem…

          • @FeRGan: I think of it as a Router or Splitter..

In Prospect, we got an "outside box"
(Connected to very high speed NBN feed.

Up to 4 users (incl'd us) could share that
"O.box" (ISP / RSP controls speed of
each line leading away fro that box

(RSP - supplied boxes are both Modem
& Router (ie, for your network- WiFi &
            Wired)

            Of course, YMMV…

        • I don't think NBN come to the house.

@FeRGan: It'll be delivered to you pre-connection then

          • @FeRGan: In Prospect FTTP, NBN guy connected outside box to inside box,
            so needed access to inside.

Oh… Almost Forgot: then to the RSP-supplied box.

          • @FeRGan: I was wrong, they do.

Probably best to get just a router since NBN supplies a modem. I highly recommend the Asus RT-AC86U which is the newer version of the RT-AC68U that I have. Solid router and highly customisable.

    • Thanks, I'll have a look at it. Are you sure NBN supplies the modem? I thought the isp does.

You get it from the ISP, but its NBN property afaik

If you have a white box in the house aka the NTD then you only need a router as the NTD does the modems job or modulation.

If you don't have a white box then you need a modem router combo as there is no modulation done by the nbn connection (FTTN needs modem router combo's, FTTP needs routers only).

  • Make sure the fibre has been terminated well. I was having lots of dropouts with the new NBN. I found the plugs on all 4 of the fibre cables just fell off, the technician installed and didn't even notice the problem.
The first idiots that came in to install the fibre had no idea, they spent the first 4 weeks cutting concrete channels then refilling the holes and cutting again !!! Not sure how they even managed to score the contract.

I have FTTC - you get a NBN connection device (Supplied by NBN) and then you need a router which is either supplied by the ISP (if on a plan) or you BYO - Given the lack of technical specification available I went with the internode supplied router which thus far seems sufficient for the job.

At my warehouse we have a FTTN connection and only the VDSL modem is required (no nbn connection box).
