What video games do you play with your significant other?

As the title suggests.

Further details:
I've been in a relationship for 2 and a half years. I've always enjoyed gaming and wanted to share that with my girlfriend. She's never really been into gaming and the only game system she ever had growing up was a PS1 so, naturally, her favourite game is Crash Bandicoot.

We've had fun playing the remastered trilogy together and other games we've had fun with have been SnipperClips, Human Fall Flat and other games like Mario Party.

I'm after some sort of co-op title on any of the three major consoles that we both may enjoy playing together.

Side note: As she doesn't have much gaming experience, she doesn't like games with dual analog controls and ends up getting frustrated and therefore bored easily with them.

What games have you enjoyed with your partners? Do you play video games with your partners in the first place or just keep that as a personal hobby?

    • But that isn't what I'm asking. They're broadly asking about which are good co-op games. I'm asking specifically about which games fit this situation

Have some kids and neither of you will have time for gaming. Problem solved.

    • +1

But you need money for kids. I use this site for a reason :)

      • You need money to game as well.

        • Yeah you're right. The money to game is exactly the same as keeping a human being alive.

          Sound argument

  • Get back into retro gaming and play the games she liked on PS1.

Or go back and play all the classics on the SNES which if you've never played before (sounds like you are young if the first console was a PS1) are quite a lot of fun to play together. Plus the controls are simple.

    • This actually isn't a bad idea. I have the SNES mini and we've played that a bit but never got hooked on anything there as a couple.

What PS1 era games would you suggest? Or 64 titles I suppose. I have a PSTV, PS3 and Wii U for some older games on their respective online stores

      • Kirby Golf is fun on SNES mini

      • Mod your SNES mini and go through the back catalogue of SNES games.

  • So many games these days are "cinematic experiences" (especially PS4) and my wife often enjoys watching some of these. We 'played' the whole of Detroit: Become Human together making some of the choices together (over a month since like Galdalf said, kids)

    • We tried playing Life is Strange but it didn't immediately hook her whereas it became one of my favourite games ever when I played it. I think it's still that dual analog thing. Maybe we'll give those another go. We tried playing the co-op mode of Beyond Two Souls but never progressed further than the 2nd or 3rd chapter unfortunately.

The Lego ones are pretty fun for coop, we made it into a competition of who could get the most coins 😊

    • I personally have only really fallen in love with Lego City Undercover. But I've now got quite an accumulation of Lego games due to things like Games With Gold. Maybe it's time for another crack at them!

What are some of the better ones in your opinion?

      • I wouldn't say the game play is fantastic, but I enjoy playing them as my hubby will normally be glued to his r6, now rdr2 :p I enjoyed the marvel and the Indiana Jones!

      • i loved the original star wars lego ones, most of the other lego games have been meh, but lego city undercover was surprisingly fun

    • Are newer ones less buggy?
Pirates of Caribbean was very buggy.

They are fun co-op except for the missions where split second move to get an item and you miss it and have to repeat some crappy level all over again just to get same place.

  • I generally find that retro games tend to do pretty well for these sorts of things. The skills required to become good at video games have really increased dramatically over time. I really enjoyed blasting through the old Mario titles with my wife, so maybe getting an NES/SNES classic would be a good idea. Same idea with the old Sonic games…etc. These games work well because you don't have to be too invested. Just 30 mins here or there is enough to beat some levels.

That said, if you're thinking about getting one of these old classic consoles, I'd just recommend getting an old Wii or Wii U on eBay and getting the titles you want on Virtual Console. With the NES/SNES Mini, I find I don't play more than 50% of the games.

I'd also recommend the Super Mario Galaxy games, especially the second one. Compared to 64 and Odyssey, they are less "open world", so the missions are more well defined (think older Mario games, but in 3D) as opposed to being more "exploration" based as 64 and Odyssey are. Obviously the family favourite titles like Mario Kart and Mario Party are also good.

I also find that sports games work quite well. My wife and I quite enjoy playing FIFA, for example. We are both soccer fans though, so obviously that helps. Racing games are also lots of fun.

Older shooters like Halo also have very good co-op modes, but I find that they're hard to get into with someone who isn't willing to sink the time and effort into getting good at them. Same goes for most genres like fighting games.

    • I've got all consoles and games mentioned in this post.

We tried the sonic thing and I was told he's "too fast"

What other VC games do you suggest? Anything from the 64/PS1 era?

      • VR is pretty funny if you guys don't mind taking turns watching each other haha lol.. pretty funny moments especially when they really get into it haha lol.

      • Parappa the rapper on PS1.

Dance Dance Revolution is fun on PS1 but you need to invest in two dance mats.

Mario Kart on any system is fun, but the SNES version is the easiest.

        Tony Hawk 2.

  • Pinball.

Vacuuming 2k19,do the dishes 2, and how to stack the dishwasher 3, which I recently finished level 7

  • +1

My left hand and I have been playing Wolenstein The New Colossus, while waiting for Shadow of War to download.

  • Really got into Trine 2, as you help each other get through the level using your combined skills and logic by completing the puzzles. Then decided to get all the rest of the series, but 2 was the best.

Diablo was also really fun to just battle it out against hundreds of enemies together.

  • +3

Overcooked is good fun. Mario tennis is good too. Maybe try donkey Kong tropical freeze or Rayman.

I've found the switch to be best for couch co-op games and if you haven't tried the above I'd definitely recommend them.

  • I am single but my couple friends are all nintendo fans and I think they used to play Dragon Age together and stuff so maybe co-op dnd rpgs?

Honestly any team communication imho would be awesome like battlefield or some team play game with voice comms like pubg or fortnite even.

If I had a partner I would introduce them to team shooters more focused on team play than laser pew pews like cod.

My most fun with close friends on pc has been through rts and turn based strategy games all on discord or skype or something before though.

If you guys are blizzard fans well retro blizzard games are for me the holy grail for online gaming with friends and even strangers.

PUBG for example for me doesn't work with strangers. I have to meet them on a discord or something then start playing with them I play PUBG and some other team shooters with friends made from a battlefield discord.. honestly it is the only voice comm friendly game I know of when you have the right people.

For couch play I reckon fighting games or smash bros would be fun or like others have said some co-op games maybe like ibb and obb.. that was a funny game but depending on your guys patience levels it could end badly haha lol :)

I hope you find the right game keep us posted I am genuinely interested to find out what you eventually go with.

Overcooked is good, especially if you want to learn patience and how to talk to people, especially when your frustrated that they can't even wash 2 f%@king dishes when I'm over here cutting Mushrooms and plating soup, just grab the dishes on your way back and wash them, you don't even have to take them off the sink, I just need them f&#king clean, since I can't leave these mushrooms alone because the rats will take them and I can't afford to cut any more mushrooms because onions are next!

    • +1

That doesn't sound fun at all. :/

  • The only game I ever played with my wife was Mario on my Wii. Neither of us have the time nor much interest to play games anymore.

    • Just out of curiosity, why is that? Job related? Lack of free time? Using free time differently?

      • They just don't interest me anymore, a couple of times recently I have played Mario kart with my kids but other than that I guess I've just grown out of it (not meaning that to be rude)

  • +2

    Leisure Suit Larry

    • +1

      Ha.

  • Is she musical? Try Rock Band 4, you on lead and her on bass. Rock Gods!

    • Whilst I am musical, she unfortunately is not. I do have Guitar Hero Live though. We might give that a go

  • Apart from Overcooked, we played Never Alone and Unravel 2, both great. We played a little of Portal Knights which was ok. I suspect minecraft would be really fun to play together, but we haven't.

We also play one player games together, puzzlers, platformers, and some point and clicks. Anything that is not too action packed or complicated or stressful. I might do some of the harder bosses or trickier platform parts. I think anything story driven will be easier for both people to enjoy:

Inside, A Hat In Time, Poi, Ratchet and Clank, Broken Age, Unravel, Grow Home, The Witness, Yonder.

I would also suggest trying Stardew Valley multiplayer when it is available. I also really enjoy a game called Risk of Rain. It's fun coop, but not for my other, but youse might like it.

This may surprise some (it surprised me!) but my wife who is not a gamer, and certainly wasn't into shooters or dual analogue stick controllers, has been playing Halo with me almost since its intro in 2001.

I get the vibe she thinks herself Xena Warrior Princess going into battle.

I think what I've got is rare. And awesome.

Any chance Halo can spark your girlfriend's interest? 🙃

    • I guess it's worth a shot. She hasn't expressed any major interest in wanting to try it although we've never actually tried playing together

  • Rayman Legends has been gold to date & is our current go-to. It's an absolute hoot when we play it - yeah maybe occasionally plenty of shouting and what not at the game..and each other ;) also yet we are genuinely laughing at or with each other for the majority of the time. It really is great!

Crash Bandicoot is decent fun; albeit still as bleeping frustrating as it was 20+ years ago! and each taking turns aspect can slow the fun vibe a touch.

I put Spyro on the other night and she liked it as was quickish for her to learn and we took in turn playing - again not true co-op but was fun enough directing/helping each other in levels

We have a handful of Kinect Games {Same as the Wii style moving ones too} - the sports ones are fun for awhile as is Kinect adventures yet sometimes sitting asses on the couch is more appealing than jumping around for us both!

Although i haven't played it on my console; I've watched my nephews play Lego Marvel Superheros 2 and aside them having a blast i was loling watching them play and when i have a quick go enjoyed it a lot so reckon has potential

If you YouTube co-op games you will see a bunch of titles and [depending on the reviewers/presenters] gives a pretty decent overview of options.

My Mrs doesn't really like shooting games as such [albeit she is not too bad at them], so has narrowed the choices a touch {i did explain the premise of A Way Out and after she was't overly sold on it - explained that both players have to be involved to actually play the game which added to its appeal - so least it's on the list again lol} yet she was going through the YouTube vids with me and thus helping the decision process for us both vs me just guessing.

So maybe try same with yours {if not already} as will let her see some stuff for herself that may jump out that you may have missed not thinking she would like? As picking/deciding on a game together helps the vibe/flow - she suggested Rayman Legends & it's been so much our go to havent looked for much since.

An example of me not thinking she would like it; mine noticed QUBE on a separate video somewhere and asked me to find it for her. Yeah its only a 1 player (so apologies for digressing again) but when she plays it i help her through the levels.. so whilst not a true co-op we are cooperating to progress the game. I then downloaded The Bridge as was on PS+ and she loves it. again its only single player yet being so trippy she wants help getting through it :)

    • This is quite a thorough post. I appreciate it!

I'll try the YouTube idea. Thanks!

      • v welcome no probs @ all :)

        Good Hunting! thumbsup

  • Cars 3, Rayman legends and overcooked on the xbox. Although we would end up screaming and yelling at each other when playing overcooked

  • Overcooked and PubG. I'm also interested in getting into things like 'think of the children' and 'scout's honor' (in the same vein as overcooked… coop games ftw!!)

  • I've played two games with with the partner (whom has 10 years on me) She never gamed as a child growing up, rurally - and is not used to it at all. She wanted to give it a crack but not play something boring/slow (I tried to start her off with Telltale games)

We ended up playing Halo on Xbox - she struggled with the joy stick and wrapping her head around the concept of using both joysticks at the same time to look/move at the same time.

Halo kinda works as a "training game" - She'd become a human decoy - run in and take a go at things by herself - and I'd stay back, sniping the more powerful mobs at range - leaving her to clean up grunts and jackals. While she would still die quickly, she'd basically insta-res on my position then run back in maximising down time. I'm sure there are other games that you could do this with.

The other game we played together was World of Warcraft - she was much better with keyboard/mouse controls despite using those things quite a lot in her work experience. Moving/Looking etc - using skills.

WoW worked as she loves her fantasy stuff and questing / doing stuff in the early starter areas was super easy. From memory I played a druid, and she played a pally/priest. Happily do that again, even if it is slow and boring and have done those areas to death.

I would not do instances with her unless it was an all friend party who knew what was going on (Last I checked you could probably pass most instances with 3 players). Doing pugs with her wouldn't be fair for anyone involved.

Since getting a PS4 - I'm looking at getting another controller and Diablo, Borderlands and other games we can split screen with.

    • This is some cool insight.
      Thanks!

  • Hentai Puzzle Simulator 18 Plus Edition.. There may or may not be co-op and joystick controls compatibility ;)

  • Child of Light was a pretty fun coop game for me and my girlfriend. Borderlands too.
