2018 Honda CRV - Ticking Noise

Hi All,

I recently bought a 2018 Honda CRV VTI-S model.

Since I've got the car, I've noticed there is a ticking noise every 3-4 seconds or so when the engine is completely off. The sound starts as soon as I turn off the engine. Also, when I enter it after leaving it overnight. The noise is coming from around the steering wheel.

Does anyone have a CRV that does the same thing?

Quite annoying when you just want to read a few emails on the phone while the engine is off.

Thanks

It's a feature of modern efi engines.

Pegaxs will be here shortly to explain the technical side.

Pretty much what the dealership is trying to say but I find it annoying that nothing can be done about it. I just want to sit in my car in silence sometimes :(

    • It’s a bit hard to diagnose without an MS Paint diagram… and after the other thread about using phones at work, thought I better do something for the day… :D

What it sounds like to me is the car contracting as it is cooling. On a new car, it’s not unusual to hear weird sounds.

The other thing it could be is one of the vehicle systems going through a shut down system check/cycle. Some of the steering locks are now electric and can make a weird buzzing sound, but that only lasts a moment.

It could even be the key in chime or something related to that. An annoying reminder to do something?

Without hearing it in person and locating the source, I am only spitballing. But I am curious, might visit the local Honda dealer and see if I can test drive one and have a listen.

There's a mechanic stuck under the dash

Maybe OP needs to learn Morse code to understand what the Mechanic is trying to tell them.

  • What does the dealer say?

    • I took it to the first month service and after some head scratching, they concluded that it was due to the electric brakes being applied as soon as I open the door.

  • " Its bad mate gonna needa replace the whole engine"

  • Nope

    • Can you elaborate? Do you have a CRV?

Yep, 7 seater. But maybe I've not noticed it/I'm deaf?

        Is it this?

        • Is it the 2018 model? The Honda mechanics are saying it's a newer model thing.

And yes! That link you provided is exactly what is. The mechanics say it stops after 3 mins too so I should test it. Thanks mate.

          • @Hunter14: Yes. I will try and listen for it and report back, give me till next week maybe.

But you said it still happens overnight?

            • @John Kimble: Yeah the article explains it well. It's pretty much your break booster powering up in anticipation of you starting the engine. It triggers as soon as you open the door. So it probably it is not ticking all night as I first thought. Only once you open the door and for 3 minutes. The article aligns with what the mechanics were saying too. Still annoying for an OCD person like me though.

@Hunter14: Less annoying than not having Power assisted brakes ;)

              • @Hunter14: Was easy to find, I just googled your forum topic and found it in a few seconds…also found your whirlpool post :p

                • @John Kimble: You must be using another google because I've been trying to google this without luck. All the forum posts are about engine ticking which I don't have a problem with.

Also, social experiment completed: Ozbargain > Whirlpool :)

My car had a similar ticking noise, was apparent when stopped at the lights. It was my Timex watch.

Get a mirror on a stick and have a careful look under the car.

  • When metal expands and contracts, due to heat variations, it will often exhibit audible tapping sounds that sound quite hollow and tinny.

If the sound is isolated to specifically around the steering column it could be that there are components in that area specifically that are experiencing large fluctuations in heat, or it could be something completely unrelated to heat distortion of the steel.

Is the sound specific and mechanical in nature, does it maintain its cadence rhythm and can be timed with a watch? If it’s irregular, and only occurs when the vehicle has been driven or the engine ran (and therefore generated radiant heat) I would consider that it’s some sort of heat distortion, however if it is specific and artificial then it’s likely to be some sort of action being performed (either by design or a fault).

Do some more investigation, if possible try and record the sound, and note times when it is and isn’t occurring.

    • Hi mate, thanks for that. Honda has told me it's the electric brake booster that's powering up. As soon as I open the door, it is activated and the ticking lasts for 3 minutes and then stops. I've checked and it's consistent with what they said. I also went to the dealership and asked to have a look at a few of the same models and they all did the same. A minor annoying feature but I've accepted it.

No worries. Glad you got it sorted. :)

  • I do hear a ticking noise now! Great. Thanks for pointing it out :/

Haha, sorry buddy. Well if you didn't notice it before then can't be too bad for you. I noticed it the very next day and now only starting to get used to it.
