  the longer they are, the easier they are to out stress on the cord and break.

  Basically you get a cord like this loop it through the source, and then loop your laptop lock to the other end. My brother has done this at college.

  Remember a chain is as strong as the weakest link.

  EDIT 2: desktop computer locks (same "kensington" style lock) are 3m long

    hmmm, i need the lock itself. so I should just get a few 1.1m ones and join them together? rather than go for a single long one? $40 for one seems pretty pricey

      oh thats just the manufacturers website - just to prove there are 2m ones out there. I just saw one on ebay $15 free delivery.

      It just depends what you can find. A 1.5m lock and 1m cord might be cheaper than a 2.5m lock (if available)
